hey i just bought a 1994 eclipse gs with a 1.8l sohc 4g37 with 184k miles. the car just doesnt have any push like getting on it it doesnt have alot of pop. is there some simple soulutions to this

well it is a 1.8 sohc... with a good amount of miles... the 1.8s dont really have the get up for such a heavy car

I have a 91 laser with a 1.8L also, its a pretty gutless car but it also has 330,000km on it still runs fairly strong but burns a little oil now. their an econo engine if you rev is right its got a little pep in the first few gears but at highway speeds its a dud.

I had one for my first car that became my DD until I sold it.

Take it for what it is, an excellent reliable economy car.

Save up and get a turbo DSM and keep the 1.8 as a daily, it was really nice (for me) to still know I was driving a DSM through the winter.. I'd drive me nuts if I was stuck in something like a geo all winter.. With the 1.8 I still enjoyed the car.

I know people who have turboed the 1.8 with a 9B turbo off a Dodge Colt. It works alright with really low boost and good tuning. But you're probably better off just looking for a fun car and keeping the 1.8 as a daily.

I had two 4G37 units - One was a 1991 and the later one a 1990.

I sold the 1991 to my daughter (has an automatic and approaching 198k miles on it and still runs like a top - course, I put a belt kit into it and new lifters..), and the 1990 had a JDM 4G37 with a Cyclone 12v Mitsubishi AIR-JET head sitting on the block, with a F5M22, 5sp tranny (in which I did the Redline-MT90 fluid change on it...) driving the front end.

That 12v head woke that little motor up pretty good after I did the belts and both seals (picts in my profile..) and I got that thing easily past 130mph and it still wanted to keep going, but when the front end started to think of getting light, had to bring it down to a sane speed.

Sold that one so I can get my Plymouth Turbo .. but that was a fun little car.. and still got over 30mpg on it as a DD.

But, do agree: the 4G37 was a tad too underpowered for the weight of the chassis. They should have put in the 4G63 SOHC motor in from the first Galant's and then did a 4G64,2.4 DOHC in the NT and Turbo lines.
