Thank you Steve. I may wait and have the parts store VERIFY that this is for a 5 speed. I read somewhere that I should ask for a 1990 Laser starter, as they were all 5 speed but FWD. Everytime I do a search for answers, I get a different answer and sure don't want to do this again as my back hates me for doing it ☹️

ASA didn't care FWD vs AWD only MT vs AT. Decoding the MNHFL4M or MRHML4M always makes my eyes hurt. It isn't until I write them that I can see it's just MH vs MR then the trim level H or P and 4 vs 9 for Fed vs California.

Parts store may not reflect this but I thought there were no auto 90 awd. The intercooler inlet's are different on a 90 are different for this reason.

Correct Paul, 1991 was the first year of the auto TURBO model, their were n/t auto’s I believe.
According to ASA there are a bunch of different part numbers of the years but after the superseded lists you wind up with two, MD172860 for the manual trans and MD172861 for the automatics. Other sites like STM list the MD172860 as fitting both the 1G types.

And my somewhat swiss cheesed memory says there has always been a difference between the two that causes engagement issues if you use the wrong one. I can't find original Mitsubishi specs but Bosch shows a few differences in angle and width of the pinion.

Not sure at this point but it seems like the auto version has three ridges on the nose and the manual version is solid.
Hey Steve I found this info from AI on a google search.

Now I think I’m gonna swap out my starter for the auto one LOL

I still don't trust AI one bit. ROFL If I tell it "You're wrong" it says something else and apologizes, hehehe. I "play" with AI and test it. Makes me SMH. ;)
If I knew the actual difference to look for, I would be comparing all of my starters from partouts I have bought. One I have, that looks identical to my 5 speed unit, has an automatic signal pigtail on it and I don't know the difference, physically. 🤔🤔

OK its time to compare 1g starters, for anyone that can point out the difference in any of these and which one has the auto pigtail already on it??? I don't see any difference except the stamped #'s on the head. Sorry they are upside-down. 🤔🤔
I am not sure that 2 of the 3 are any different but I know which one was on my car and it still works.
Thanks.

I don't mean to confuse everyone. My car quit starting so I can't immediately test it until I fix that issue or I'd bolt it up at this point.
Thanks for your time everyone.
✌️

Okay last post on this in the hangout LOL, the part# @steve referenced a few posts back, the md172861 is for a 2g auto, which I know IS specific to the 2g as according to w4a33, the 2g auto vs manual starters are different, on the 1g, according to stmtuned, they were the same part#

So needless to say I’m leaving my 90 5spd starter in there LOL

This is the starter off the 91 auto GSX I got my swap parts from, looks identical to my 5 spd one and according to stmtuned the 1g auto/5 spd had the same part # :idontknow:

It's possible, they do use a different flex plate between 1g and 2g.

Thank you to ALL! I shall install my starter. If it has any issue, I will rant about it later. ROFL
Much appreciation to you all. :hellyeah:

Nice...I like mine in the A-pillar. I image there one of the others is a wideband... but what are the other 2 gauges?

I'm B A C K........
The report on the 1g starter is resolved. I installed the NEW DURALAST #DLG5168 and it bench tested fine (I didn't want to do the work only to have a crappy parts store unit).
I installed it this morning, while it was cool and
IT WORKS JUST FINE. No funny sounds or grinding etc. Smooth sound and the car fired up on the second hit of the switch. WHY it wouldn't start, IDK, maybe that floppy terminal on the solenoid. I am just happy it starts and runs again. I noticed a small amount of oil on top of my FMIC and determined that one of my nylon braided 8an oil cooler lines is leaking so I need to square that away now.
Thanks once again for all of the advice, searching and answering my dumb questions! I hope it helps others.

Thanks brother, It just has the Megan mid pipe. Its a resonator.
That dash trim is awesome! Did you create that file and print it?

Started this headache of trimming the fat off the chassis harness 🥲

I have some wiring planned for the winter. Basically remove wires from the engine bay that are no longer needed, consolidate branches, and get rid of all the wiring under the radiator. I want to branch them cleaner. My bay has a birdnest on the passenger side and is such an eye sore

What I was thinking was on the A pillar just run the electrical stuff like the wide band pirometer and volts gauges on the cluster trim the mechanical gauges oil and boost gauges since oil would be running to the oil gauge
