XXR 527 in 18x8.75 -35 offset with 255/35/18 direzza star specs

Once the issue of wheels wider than 8.5 needing a low offset or spacers to stay off Evo 8/9 brakes came up, I started reading around and found that it seems to be true. If 9"-wide RFP1s won't clear without a low offset or spacer, I'd worry that the DR-31s won't either. The only 17x9s that I've seen verified to work in an offset up around +38 to +40 are Weds SA-70s and SA-90s, but those are out of your budget.

Why do you insist on 9"-wide? A 15# 17x8.5 will probably out-perform a 22# 17x9 in just about every way except sharpish turns near the limit.

In any event, here's what I'd do: head over to EvoM and start reading the tire/wheel fitment sticky in the (plain) Evo suspension and handling forum.

To answer your question honestly, that IS soley an appearance preference. I want to run 255's and I like the fitment of the tire on a 9" rim. Also, while I agree the 8.5" 16# rim may outperform the 22# 9" rim, it is still DOUBLE the price, so for a daily driven rim that's going to get beat up, is that performance edge really worth TWICE the price? Not arguing, just explaining my reasoning. Do you think there would still be fitment issues without the brembos and with a thinner caliper such as wilwoods, because I've been contemplating switching anyways for this exact reason. I don't want to be limited when I AM ready to throw down a nice chunk for some track wheels when that time comes. If you think I'll still have the fitment issues, then I may have no option but to go with the XXR's in 18x8.75 in order to run the width setup I want, clear the brakes, and stay under that $600 budget...

So Chris and Caleb, what is your opinion on the 18x8.75 +35 XXR 527? Since I already know the will clear my brakes and are in my price range, and meet my width requirements. I know jtmcinders thoughts but I'd just like some other opinions. If you were looking for a rim that met the same criteria as I want and have mentioned, would you run them, or would you look for something else and if so, what?

I was actually looking at those same wheels, same specs, for the Talon. Figured they're close enough to the size of the Evo X wheels I have on the car now that they'd be okay with fitment. I don't really care about wheel weight, wheel strength, and/or optimal handling as much on the Talon as I do the Eclipse. But after putting the silver Evo X wheels on the car I don't know if I'll be looking at the XXR's anymore. These wheels have the stock sized 245/40/18 tires on that come with the Evo.

Given my well-established expertise on all things cosmetic, I hope it carries much weight that I really like the look of Evo X wheels on a 2G.

Those were actually what I was lookin at prior to the XXR's but after lookin around I came across the XXR's and for about the same price if not cheaper, being new rather than used, same weight, slightly wider width, and slightly better looking appearance in shape and color choice, figured I might as well go with the XXR's. Now I'm just torn between them and the 17x9 Dr-31's...

Keep in mind that with the Evo X wheels, at least you won't need to run a hubcentric ring and the bolt pattern is made for your car so you won't have extra unused bolt holes like you would on the XXR's and any other "universal fit" wheel - which I don't really care for. It's a factory fit all around. I really like the concave design of the XXR's better but I like the OEM fitment of the Evo X wheels... just wish I could find some Talon center caps to replace the Mitsu ones on there.

The concave offset is what sold me on them. That's why I wish they came in 17x9 or 8.75 because the concave would be even more drastic. Before anyone jumps on me saying its appearance, I believe that daily driver wheels should have a degree of form to go with the function...

Not every application warrants 100% commitment to absolute performance without compromise. I'll be one of the first to encourage someone to focus more on the performance aspects when choosing modifications. But on a street car that won't see the track all that much, something like wheel choice should probably be more of an appearance decision based on what you like, so long as it doesn't hinder performance - and I want my car to look good too.

The performance compromise between an 18" wheel and a 17" wheel is negligible - it's not as drastic as, say, the difference between a set of quality coilovers and the cheap coilovers that so many DSMers gravitate to these days. The idea Jtoby is pushing is that if you want the best performance, a 17" wheel is the better option in most cases. But don't feel guilty if you want to go with an 18" wheel for your daily driver. It's not like you're going to be really hurting the performance of the car like you would if you slammed it, or went with cheap coilovers. And the nice thing is, you can always get some lightweight track wheels later.

Well, let me add (again) one more thing about 17s vs 18s on the street (and then I'll try to drop it): the additional sidewall of 17s (assuming same brand/model of tire and same overall diameter) provides a much better ride than 18s. Even more, since the biggest problem with cheap shocks for 2Gs is too much high-speed compression damping, having the larger sidewall to absorb more road imperfections is one of the easiest and best ways to compensate for crappy shocks.

But, if you can talk him into buying one of my sets of Evo X GSR wheels, Chris, please do so. :)

I DID manage to find a wheel in 17x9, only 17lbs, and under $600 for a set!!! The only thing is, one having trouble findinthe offsets available for them. I know so far that they come in a +30 offset. I'm trying to find out if they come in something between +35 to +38 offset. Only thing is, I CANNOT find a website for them! I'm actually wondering with the name "TR" motorsports if possibly they are made by Tire Rack themselves since they seem to have the biggest selection of them. These are the C3's but they have a couple other models that look nice too. They're not concave, unfortunately, like I like with the XXR's, but to have a 17x9, 5 lbs less, and still at the same price, I could take the sacrifice. I just hope the come in a +35 to +38 offset... I'll be calling tire rack shortly to find out and update here. In the meanwhile, please give me any opinions or feedback. Also, if anyone has experience with them, that'd be awesome. I'll ask what the hub bore is too. Thank you!!!

I believe I they discontinued the kosei's. I called about these but unfortunately they only come in +30, 48, and 62. :(. Still torn between the 527's and Dr31's... :(

I've been a fan of my Kosei rims. Not sure what sizes they come in, but they are rather light and cheap.
Are they the K1 or K1-TS? The TS comes in 17x9 I believe, but the K1 only comes in 17x8 if I remember correctly - I had a set. Wish they were available in wider sizes, they're nice and light, and widely used in racing. Another nice old school options is the 5zigen FN01RC in 17x9.

Looks like the K1-TS in 17x9 with 35mm offset were discontinued a few years back. You'd have to find them used - might check EvoM, as some Evo guys were running them.

Yeah 18x9.5 fn01rc's with 265/35 or 40's were what I hat on my EVO and the looked, rode, and handled great! That's why I really thought the 18x8.75's with a 255/35 would be great on the 2g too .... Only thing about the fn01rc is they're in the same price range as the rpf1's which for me, is too steep for a daily driver wheel.

Have you considered Rota DPT's yet? They are offered in a 17x9, 35 offset and they clear EVO 8/9 Brembos without a problem. They weigh 18.9 pounds and cost $949 on Wheeldude. I personally think they look pretty good and I haven't seen them on a DSM yet. Here is a thread from EVOM with some pictures.

Fn01rc's are roughly the same specs and price. Is much rather have those over rotas

Oh, com'on, Kris. You've been around long enough to know exactly what kind of thread this is. It's one of those compromise threads where, on the surface, it's about handling, but, deep down, when it really comes to handling vs appearance, the thread-starter will side with the latter. But he or she just can't bring him- or herself to face this fact - at least, not yet - so he or she will insist that it's about handling and will do anything possible to rationalize why the better-looking set-up (in his or her opinion) is not the one that handles less well.

ps. not sure why I bothered with all the "him or her"s ... these threads are invariably started by males

Well I have these rims:) for appearance of course but I must say they demand a lot of attention when I am at the red light not to mention what happens in between red lights ;) full throttle mayhem LOL!:sneaky:

Ps I love the rims:ro
