WTH is this noise?

Guys, I'm really starting to get worried. What the hell is this noise, now it sounds like it's coming from the pan toward the front, is this rod knock in your opinion? The oil pressure dummy light isn't on, and haven't hooked up my new gauge yet (you can see the new sender, the old one didn't work). Ugh... Help? Thanks guys!

Its kind of hard to tell. Does it get louder as you rev it up? Did you run your engine low on oil? What caused it to happen?
What you have posted in the video sounds kind of vauge, but it might something under the timing cover. You need to get a friend to rev up the motor and get clips from above and below.

I can't tell much from the video. You could easily change the oil or pull the pan though because if that is rod knock its pretty loud and i could bet there would be some shavings let over. Not saying it is rod knock though i just cant tell from the video what it may be.

I changed the oil and no shavings, oil looked good, just old. It doesn't get worse/better when you rev it, that's what's weird, it's always the same noise, no change. I've had it for coming up on 2 weeks, haven't really driven anywhere (still have to pass smog but the turbo is so shot it won't pass because of the oil in the downpipe jacking the HC # up). =\

Hmm sounds weird not to be changing in noise with revving the engine. It doesnt speed up with revving at all? If there are not any shavings i think you will be fine internally wise. Maybe your lifters are not getting enough oil? Pop your oil cap off and you should see some oil sitting down in there. Is there anything stuck in your timing cover possibly? Hell it could even be a small crack in your manifold possibly? There are many different possibility's..

its not rod knock. check your lifters see it there geting oil. try to turn you car over sloyly by hand and see it you can hear anything hiting something. the noise could be realy soft so it might take 2 people to do that. pull your timing cover and see if all is good there.
hope this helps some

I'll try all of those.
Believe me, the 6-bolt is sounding awful nice, contacted a guy with a forged shortblock for sale, would be a great engine for a good price. Just afraid of having way more money in this thing than what I'll get out of it. It originally started out as a good deal until the drama started happening, LOL.

probably not......

heres another video for your reference

YouTube - 92 talon knocking motor

Hey, did you see your stock components oakie rigged in there under the hood? Not sure if you noticed or not. LOL.

Oh trust me I know how you feel on the money part. I have close to 10k dollars into my car and I cant sell it for 5k even. But try those and hopefully It's just something stupid for your sake.

Thanks man, I really need that. I asked the wife if she wanted it "nice" again, but we would have to keep it since I'd have too much invested. Also said I could leave it as a beater and flip it later after she's done with school. She said she wants to keep it so... Wifes happy, life's happy. =)

does not sound like a knock to me.Start pulling valve cover, oil pan,t belt cover and inspect. Check your turbo bolts also, I had those bolts to back out before could hear alot of knocking, thought bearings were going out again.

I'll see what I can find, I swear it sounds like it's coming from down low, I'll see what I can find. Not real motivated to tear into this thing, not as easy to work on as the ol LS1, LOL.

Nothing out of the ordinary under the timing cover except the cover was broken into multiple pieces. I only reattached the crank to water pump to alternator belt (just to drive the WP) and fired it up, still clacking like hell. It sounds just like it's coming from the rear balance shaft, is that a possibility? No oil pressure dummy light, and about to wire up the gauges to see what kinda oil psi I've got.

it doesn't sound like a knock to me. what it sounds like is a belt pulley bearing. probably coming from the serp. assembly. it may be the timing belt assembly, but i would check the serpentine pulleys first. try greasing them if yours are serviceable, and if the noise doesn't stop it may be your timing belt. so let's hope its the first option... or something else other than the timing belt.

also, timing belts are usually required to be changed at around 100,000 miles, so if yours hasn't been changed, and you got high miles, better change it before it kills your engine.

Right on, I'll look into it. Strange thing is, I fired it up tonight to show the neighbor and it seemed louder with the clutch in than out, then the noise seemed to stay about the same. I could push the clutch in and it'd be louder, let it out and it'd quiet down for until I pushed the clutch in and then let out and it was the same, so... Could still be crankwalk. Not entirely sure. I'm swapping to the evo III 16g this week sometime now that I have the gauges installed (just need to wire the senders to ground and to the wires on the gauges, no big deal) and will try to get the thing smogged and over to my friends shop, he'll probably be able to tell for sure, I'm just so used to working on v8 setups, this is my first 4 banger setup and balance shafts, etc. are all new to me!

PS - How would I check the serpentine setup? (I have it exposed now until my new timing covers show up) and the belt looks to have been replaced at some time, it currently has 132k on it, just not sure what else would wear out or could be checked.)

Thanks guys!

the only way i know to check the serpentine set up is to remove the belt (i know, its a pain). then spin each of the pulleys one at a time by hand (while the car is off). if you notice any sort of grinding then the bearings or the whole pulley itself may need replacing. also check your serpentine belt for dryness or cracks. i had an annoying squeak on my wife's chrysler and it turned out to be the belt itself being dry.

I got my gauges FINALLY hooked up, 60psi of pressure @ idle, over 100 when I rev it. Front balance shaft isn't connected so the number is a hair lower than factory but the clack is still there. I honestly cannot tell wth it is. Doing the evo 3 swap today, have the radiator (installing a mishimoto) out and got the turbo removed. Looking forward to trying to get this thing running right and still looking for a 6 bolt to rebuild! >=)

When my car was makin that noise we could not figure the problem. It took 2 weeks of daily driving it for us to realize what it was. That day I got rod knock from the same area as where that noise was coming from. It was a rod bearing going out just took some time. Hopefully that's not your problem but just saying that sound is exactly what I had

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. I wanted to do a 6-bolt conversion too with 2g pistons anyway. Not really thrilled about doing the swap to be honest, or the added expense, but fortunately, we plan to keep this car.

did you say it was louder with the clutch in than out have you checked into crankwalk yet could be something hitting on the belt system and if you push the clutch it pushes it more and applies more pressure. I believe crankwalk can cause premature bearing failure but dont quote me

It does when it's cold, it just sounds crappy like clacking but doesn't sound like rod knock. Could be the early stages of it, definitely a possibility, not sure what I should do from here... I'm looking at a 6-bolt longblock to do a rebuild on, get rid of the balance shafts, and do a basic rebuild (2g pistons, rings, bearings, my fresh 2g head) and this just makes me wonder if I should prioritize it or not.

Well it's not for sure that your motor is toast but still it's possible. I am just stating what happened to me and what not. But if you are showing those signs easiest way to tell if you are close to spinning a rod bearing or are in the process you might drain your oil and see if you see metal shavings in it

When I got the car it was making that noise, I got it home, drained the oil, no shavings at all, just dirty. I'll drain the oil again and check, might as well take the damn pan off, if I'm hearing clacking, I should be able to pull the pan and check each rod for play.
