What is this noise?

i no for a fact that it is the top end. i just cant figure that out. i thought it was the bottom to but it is not

i already did. i even changed the lifters. i could not bleed the lifters though. could that be a problem

i know its tough to hear people say rod knock. like above stated: pull the damn valve cover and look then. get a mechanics steth and listen, u will be able to tell for sure if it is or isnt in the valvetrain. i know from very recent first hand experience. harbor freight, 8 bucks. go grab one and youll have a better idea where the sounds coming from

And you didn't see anything missing or wrong-looking?

Did you jump timing? When did this happen?

I've heard a similar noise to that on a 3100 in a Grand Am. Guy just finished his intake manifold (lower) job and dropped a bolt into the head. Then forgot to pull it out before putting it back together and starting it.

No the timing is good. and its been like this since i owned it. I have owned it for 2 years now. I didnt see anything wrong when i looked. After i changed the lifters i test drove it and it stop making the noise for like maybe a minute and then it did it again.

Man i listened to it again, and I am still leaning toward rod knock/spun bearing. I spun a bearing a couple months ago and although it was louder (which might just be because it was in person) it sounded basically identical to your video. Its a gut wrenching sound.

A little more of a pain but a for sure way to tell is to drop the oil pan and wiggle each rod. My guess is youll be taking this off anyways.

no it even does it when it is warm

ya this is actually really loud. did your car still run perfectly fine after you spun a bearing

get a magnetic oil plug and you will see metal in the oil bro.. your bearings are going out... time for a rebuild..

Yea it did while I drove it, was about 30 miles total on the way home from work. Sounded horrible, I was in denial at first, but ended up realizing it was. I dropped the oil pan and sure enough had spun one completely and another was going out.

But yes it ran fine, no real power loss or anything. Started right up a few times once I got it home also, didnt really miss a beat but like I said sounded horrible. Now im not saying this is for sure what it is, but it sounds exactly like it and im going to say im 99 percent sure. Definitely not lifter tick though.

Thats another way also, either get a magnetic oil plug or just drain the oil into something you can look at it in. Youll see some real tiny shiny metal in it.

If you do drop the oil pan you'll see your crankshaft and the rods attatched to it. Just wiggle each one, which you'll have to turn the crankshaft around to get to each one, and if there is any play at all in them, then the bearing is shot.

And no you cant just replace the bearings, the motor will have to be rebuilt and crankshaft machined.

No problem man, good luck. Sorry to hear it, I know how much it sucks.

whoa, did u say its been like tghis for 2 years? if u made it 2 years with that clacking its most def not a rod. be more clear on that specifically please.
