So I hear this ticking sound coming from the timing belt area of my engine  I figure I'll check the timing belt at least the top anyway. So I pop the cover off and I notice my exhaust cam gear is wobbly. Here is a video of what I'm talking about:

My 4G63 Wobbly Exhaust Cam Gear - YouTube

I notice the cam gears have these marks on them like someone was prying it with a screw driver. I didn't install that last timing belt on this car the dude that owned the car did right before I bought it and I see they didn't do the best job. These cam gear suck also it got 4 thin spokes holding it together, weakest cam gear I've ever seen.

My question is can I get a cam gear from another 4G63 engine like a 1G turbo or 1GNT or 6-bolts and put it on my 2G Turbo and can you swap an intake and exhaust gears? There are a couple 1Gs in the pick n pulls around here.

Awesome. You can use any cam gear, appropriate to intake or exhaust side, from any 1g/2g 4g63 motor and you'll be good to go.

I have seen two styles, a 4 spke and a 5 spoke, the 5 spoke I have seen have the cam sensor ring on the inside of the intake Gear.

Make sure the dowel pin on the end of the camshaft isn't bent or damaged. That could prevent the cam gear from fully seating on the camshaft. It's not a bad idea to replace the dowels anytime you remove the cam gears. The torque required to break the cam gear bolts loose can cause the dowel to bend.

Replaced the 4 spoke and weird gear with the cam sensor with 1g 5 stars because i thought they looked better LOL. and they looked even better painted HKS purple.

kewl if I can only get the 5 spoke one I will try to get the matching pair just in case.

I've never changed the timing belt on a 4G63 before but is there a certain way the cam gear goes on, like can you flip it and it'll be good or bad? I know on the 420A there is a side for 2.0L and 2.4L engines...

I'll make sure I inspect everything well before I put it back together. I'm guessing its been this way since I bought the car so I'm not too worried about it, the belt still moves straight, I just won't rev it past 5k or so. I guess since I'll be in the guts of it I will just change everything, I don't trust the last mechanic that worked on this car =(
