Hey all,
I'll preface this by saying that I am by no means a wiring expert but I just wanted to go ahead and share my journey fixing an overheating problem at idle with my GVR4.
I traced the problem down to what I thought was a faulty/burnt out SPAL fan that was installed on my Galant years before I bought it using a basic power probe. I found that the wires had been bound together with just simple connectors instead of being soldered together. When I lightly tugged on the connections they instantly fell apart, having rusted completely. After disassembling and cleaning all of the wires of all the sticky residue left behind by the melted-on electrical tape, I had the thought to re-test the fan. Sure enough, the fan wasn't burnt out after all.
Below are some pictures explaining the wiring:
One of the previous owners had completely removed the thermosensor which usually would plug into the bottom of the radiator (the car does not have the stock radiator anymore).
I believe that the wires that currently go "to nothing" are the two wires that connect to a resistor seen in this diagram:
Just to make sure that everything was working at least serviceably for now, I plugged the connector into the harness and it comes on when the ignition is switched to ON. Later on I plan on reimplementing an in-line thermosensor and rewiring it as the current radiator installed on the car seems to not have any open ports for one.
I plan on doing this because waiting for the car to warm up during the winter with a SPAL fan blowing at full blast will likely become tedious.
I have since properly protected the wiring with Tesa's High Heat harness tape and braided loom to prevent future damage to any of the wiring, and I no longer experience any overheating problems at idle.
Hopefully this post can help other people with similar issues.
