Will this weight slow me down?

I'll start off with I'm sorry if this was suppose to be in appearence, but the question isn't how they look it's if they slow me down.

Okay so I just bought some subs and put them in the back of my eclipse, they're 2 rockford fosgate t1s in an obcon steel box. The box probably weighs about 100 to 150 pounds and is sitting crooked in the back, with 1 back seat down.

Okay so my Question is will they slow me down enough to invest in a new box, or is just a little bit? Remeber I'm very low on money becuase I can't find a job yet :/

It is not that serious. Its just like having an extra person in your car. If its a daily driver, you should enjoy your car, heavy sub box and all. I recommend taking it out if you plan on taking it to the track though.

I'm confused why this thread is so long, any weight added will slow you down (whether noticeable or not) will worsen gas mileage( " ") and effect handling (" "). A rule of thumb i hear a lot is that every 100lbs = roughly .01 in the 1/4 mile. Simple answer is, you bought the stuff already, drive around and you tell me if its worth it or not. everyone answer on if its worth it or not will very.

Okay so lets see if I can reply to all this. I understand this might be a little overkill for bass, yeah I'll probably end up selling them again after a month or so of use and get something smaller, we'll see. And before I bought it I threw it in and it fit perfectly so I was set, then I tried to close the trunk.. And yeah, so they are to big for the car I understand that too.

Also, I would think a manual is quite a bit faster than an automatic.. That's why most drag cars at manual, but I could easily be wrong.

And I guess I knew that it would slow me down but the real question was would it slow me down enough to matter, and would the fuel econmy go down more than just 1 or 2 mpg. I don't intend on racing this anytime soon so that doesn't matter.

Oh and the helper subs were thrown in for free, so I was probably going to remove those anyway, I was just going to see how they sounded.

Personally, if your driving a stock dsm it shouldn't matter that much. Center it if possible and you might notice the difference but really your stock dsm won't be probably even hitting the stock 14.9 1/4 time at this age. If the sounds system makes you happy keep it. If you consider modding at a later date sell the sounds system and use the cash to buy parts.

Wow, those are crazy. And not in a good way. Without tinted windows, those subs are just screaming "STEAL ME!!!!!" They are just staring anyone that walks by in the face. As said before, get rid of them. It is too much for the car. Get a single sub so it'll fit and not take up half of your cabin and get your windows tinted.

And autos are better for drag racing. They are more consistant, easier on the driveline, easier on the turbo (especially if you compare to manual cars using anti-lag), shift faster...

For a DD don't worry about the added weight. I had 2-15 alpine type R's in a 99 saturn. It weighed well over 200 pounds. And with a 130 hp engine (about) I didnt notice any in gas mileage or any difference in DD driving. And why don't you do yourself the favor and build your own box... because that looks horrible... Sorry to say. and 1- 12inch would be fine, or 2- 10inch in a hatch. I would personally go with a 12inch, sounds good, hits lower, and can hit hard. Toss that stuff like salad. Get a 12inch, build or buy a box, keep all your trunk space, and keep it looking good. Your overkilling all your other speakers with all that bass. All your going to hear is bass and raddle. Trust me I would know. And 1- 12 will weigh less then all that in your trunk if your that worried about weight. And also... your not going to kill your battery with a 12inch as bad as you will with all that.

I would personally go with a 12inch. Sounds good, hits good, saves trunk space, will look 10x better, won't kill your battery, keep your back seat, still can get to your spare tire, and is a much better option if your worried about weight.

and plus can you see out your rear window with that box standing up... kind of looks like it's in the way.

And I agree with FLASH1970. That's throwing out a sign steal me.

will it slow you down, yes but not alot and you wouldent really notice it if you DD your and not take it to the tracks. you may feel in the handling. again, if you dont take the car to the track then it wouldent really matter.

Yes it will slow you down, plus it looks horrible. As everyone else stated just go with a nice sub/box setup that fits in the trunk area.

Get one sub i have one 12 and its plenty loud in my car, anything extra in your car will slow you down, but unless your on the track whats the hurry.

Though the extra weight might be good in the winter, or any time since you are in Alaska, smaller would be better. Her is a pic of a box I built for my 1G. Took one day, holds the SUB and covers the spare and amps. With the rear hatch cover in place, you cant see anything, no "steal me" sign.

I've considered the 'steal me' factor and I was probably going to throw a sheet over them. And for tinted windows, I'd love them but I don't have any money and can't find a job yet.

Again, I just wanted the hardest hitting system in my school for a couple months and I'll sell them and buy a single 12 and spend the rest upgrading my performance.

And as far as building a custom box like that thomcasey, I really would have no idea how to do it..

And as for the the Auto vs Manual thing a built auto will give more consistent times and for the most part are faster due to the elimination of driver error and the fact that a human can not shift nearly as fast.

Really? Yeah they're pretty powerful subs. What amp did you use to run it? I agree, but I don't go in many places that I will get them stolen. And the box weighs so much, goodluck to whoever tries to steal them to get them out. It'll be a 2 man job.

Just get a big piece pf cardboard, place it in the wheel well, trim it to fit, then you have a template for the top of the box. Make a rectangle box for the underside and put it together. You don't need the removable tire cover as your tire is in a well. Real easy.

I wouldn't worry about the weight because of your purpose of the car. What I would worry about is getting a box built for them and getting that beast mounted down. Can you imagine if you hit someone or had to really slam the brakes? That thing will make you a dashboard decoration!

Thomcasey is right its easy to do. Just need like a cheap jigsaw to do the cutting after you get the template. Use some mdf board thats 3/4" from Lowes or HD. For the box joints use some wood glue, chaulk, or silicone. Hold it all together with some countersinking wood screws that are around double your board thickness. Get some carpet to cover it from the auto store.

Just make sure to test fit while you build it.

I don't think you realize how loud its going to be with two of them. With just 1 my rear view mirror was rattle off, I was constantly adjusting it when it staying stuck to the windshield and every little plastic piece in my car rattled. The spoiler will also rattle. I would highly suggest you get a shit ton of dynamat.

As for the Amp i was using a P1000 that i got from a friend. I eventually sold them both and got a 12'' P3 with a ported box powered by a 400-2 amp. That was more than enough to go deaf and still rattle the living shit out of everything in my car.

Due to the shape of the car it transfers sound VERY well. Few cars will sound as good with a system in them

I really have never constructed any boxes in my life and that still sounds confusing to me. I'm only 16, I guess I'm not much of a handyman yet.

Yeah I'm pretty stoked but I need to get a legit amp to power them. I only have like 100 dollars left..

Not rattling stuff IN the car, rattling the WHOLE car. Cut the box in half and use one. Sell the other or trade for a decent amp. I love stereo systems I hate rattle and hate ugly setups. Clean and clear is the way to go.

Haha, I'm not going to lie rattling my whole car will be fun for a month.
I totally agree, if I had the money I'd love to setup a clean 12" JL audio sub in a nice clean box sitting nicely in my trunk.

IllEagle is right, the car it self will just rattle. If i were you i would sell one and then use the money to buy a decent amp.
And you can find box measurements online and just copy them if you don't know what your doing
