I've got a 1997 Spyder GST that I want to build.

I have a friend selling a 1999 Spyder GST, I want to purchase his car to build mine. Will I have any problems with this purchase? I don't know if the transmissions are the same, but I'm needing a transmission for my 1997.

Please let me know ^^

Thanks,

Joe

transmission should bolt up and work fine but some of the sensors might be different. if they are you just have to swap them over and depending on if you swap motors you might need the ecu also. is it auto or 5speed trans?

It's a 5-speed Manual.

He has a complete 6-bolt motor, but the motor in mine is just fine. I thought about building his motor for a replacement.

Transmission died on my main car, the 97, so I just hoped to replace the transmission for now, and use his car for parts to build up on the side for a major project down the road.

Keep your 7 bolt. You should have the updated thrust bearing so your engine is plenty strong and durable. Basically you have the same bottom end as an evo (excluding beefier rods and pistons). Anyways yeah, a 97 and 99 are pretty much the same. Both black box e.c.u. both 7 bolt updated thrust. They both have it where it counts.

The trans should be exactly the same...mitsubishi put a lot of time testing and tuning the 4g6 engines and the product of that time spent was a platform that pretty much didn't need to be changed except the MAF sensors and the number of flywheel bolts! For example in my galant I have a sixbolt 4g63t block and sevenbolt non turbo 4g64head and trans! However if you have the stock turbo set up on your engine and the turbo is still on the sixbolt I'd try to trade him turbos! The 14b on the sixbolts are slightly bigger then t28 on the sevenbolts! So if you can trade him straight up do it. You can't beat a free upgrade!

Also the 2gs do have somewhat stronger pistons and rods but they are felar from evo pistons and rods but between 1g and 2g there not different enough to worry about! But if your going big big hp then sevenbolt is the way to go!

If his 99 is a 6 bolt swap, wouldn't he have had to swap transmissions too? Or just leave the 99 box hanging on without a bolt installed? I thought the bell housing bolt pattern was slightly different. Regardless, if it still has the 99 ecu, that makes a tuning solution a lot cheaper down the road... Other than that, I can't think of anything else that would be an issue.

No, 90-99 have the same exact bellhousing pattern. There is one less bolt n the 90-94, but they all bolt together.

There is so much wrong with this post....

Edit- Misread the post. Thought you had a Spyder GS. GST to GST, regardless of 6-bolt swap, will work fine. It will be just like a typical 6-bolt swap.

WTF Um, no. The 6-bolt in stock form is much stronger in terms of handling horsepower. They are quite different internally.

I don't know if some 97's had the thrust bearing. But my 97 gst didn't have it.

Well good news all,

I'll be picking up the 99 GST later tomorrow and begin tearing it down and parting it out. For 1800 dollars, getting a complete car, minus the radiator and fly wheel.

He's upgraded the exhaust to a 3" system, has a injen air intake system, carbon fiber hood (Which I won't be using, at least on a spyder). Upgraded internals on the 6 bolt build.

Over all, I think it's going to be worth it. Later this summer I'll park my 97 and use the parts I tear off to build mine. It feels good to have a backup car to rip apart for pieces LOL.

Good call theres nothing like having an extra 4g63 sitting around to build up in the meantime not to mention awhole extra drivetrain.
