Will a 90 tsi awd tranny fit in place of my 90 gsx tranny?

So heres the deal short and sweet, i cracked my bellhouse severly and i found a cheap 90 tsi awd tranny that i can buy. I drive a 90 gsx. Are the transmissions exactly the same?

Same same, Different name same car.

Just make sure it is a 90. Check the length of the shift rods with the old unit. The 91&up had different length units from the 90 and yes they can be changed.

Here’s what I’m thinking... Why did your bell housing split in the first place? We should figure that out before you just put a new tranny in. You don’t want that to happen again.:barf:

I think it might have been installed wrong. Or maybe the pressure plate was aligned wrong?? If the last person to have it out used too many dowels and not enough bolts, do you think that could have caused it?

Was the car ever bottomed out??? Check you’re under body for scrapes.

Maybe someone hit a curb? Check your rims for any flat spots.

Just lookin out bro!;)

I believe it was because he didnt tighten the bolts correctly so it vibrated loose, and i also believe the pressure plate was installed wrong. No flat spots of any kind that i can see, and the exhaust is fine so i dont think he hit anything with it( the exhaust hangs lower then the tranny). So my plan of attack is to get the 90 tsi awd tranny and send it in to jacks to have it rebuilt with some upgrades, then tear my old tranny out and replace the T.O. bearing and pressure plate/( whole clutch maybe), then put new tranny in.

Alright well i have one more afterthought, how difficult is it to put a 1991 gsx transmission into a 1990 gsx? I know that you have to get different shift linkage.. but how difficult is it to actually put it all-together?

i know that some of them had a different spline count on the shaft to run teh t-case if i remember right from my days at in the Used Auto Parts biz... not sure what years it was changed but i remember that being a factor on what would fit in what car/transfer case

if your trans was good i would just swap the bell housing unless you don't want ot tear into it like that

Well the rail's and cables are different.
That 91 tranny might have a 22 or 23 spline count depending on manu. date.
It is always best to just count the splines.Because there is no set known date they were changed.
