Alright guys, well I just finished my 14B install in my 95 GSX. All is well besides some minor oil leaks on the return line and the SS feed line at the filter housing. There was also a VERY minor coolant leak from the front banjo bolt on the turbo. I tightened it a tad and I think i went away. Now the turbo is spooling really late because I think there may be a leak before the turbo.
Now on to the problems.

1. The turbo does not smoke at all besides at WOT sometimes it blows out whiteish grey smoke. I'm trying to think of where it could be burning coolant. It never did this before the turbo install.

2. There was some white smoke the past 2 days at the manifold. I'm thinking its the shitload of PB Blaster that I sprayed all over the car but I'm not sure.

3. There's a smell coming from my engine that I can smell if I pop my hood and it becomes more noticeable when I'm driving and really get on it. It smells like burning plastic sort of, with a mix of burning rubber. The lower heat shield is not on the car because it's a pain to get on and I haven't put it back on because I haven't had time. Nothing is touching anything hot so I 'm confused...The only possible thing is maybe I pout on a new 4 ply exhaust mani. gasket as well as antiseize on most of the bolts and the turbo-mani. bolts.

Any help? Thanks.

Are you loosing coolant?

Is the catalitic converter still installed?

I am not losing a noticeable amount of coolant, i have only driven the car 75 miles or so since the rebuild, and no CC, just a straight 3 inch back

Man it also could be condensation if the area where you leave has high humidity leves or is cold outside it is nothing to worry about. Did let it fully warm up it still smokes?

That could very easily be it, i havent noticed whether or not it continues to smoke once its all warmed up, ill be sure to check that out when i get home from class.

White smoke immediately following startup is normally valve seals leaking, particularly on the exhaust side. The oil will run down the valve stem while the engine is off and as soon as it starts and the oil sees heat from combustion, you get your smoke cloud.

I really hope it is not the valve seals... its smells nothing like burning oil, and doesnt have any sort of blue tint. i just bought a remaned head from one of the local DSM shops =/

I just had this same problem, i bought a new turbo and it still smoked, usealy when the turbo seals go , the car will smoke real bad when you hit boost,. I changed my valve stem seals and it stoped smoking right away, mine always smoked real bad when i stoped at a stop light and when i went to pull out , thats when it would smoke the most, and first start up of the day

I bought my old spyder gst back not to long ago, The girl blew up the built motor i built a few years back..

I then put a long block in that i bought off someone on turners, and i went to start it up, the car started misfiring like crazy, water shot out of the water neck and there was chocolate milk with a lot of white smoke..

I replaced the head gasket with a felpro, and put new OEM replacement head bolts in and started the car, and noticed white smoke.. again. but i let the car sit and idle for a good 20 minutes of just letting her idle and smoke, and it never stopped smoking and never went above halfway on the temp sensor. Also i saw the fans never kicked on...

What is going on!?! i been reading on the forums, white smoke could be a result of a bad turbo as well.. I also know white means coolant..

I am just not trying to loose out on anymore money...

Any ideas?

is your MAF plugged in? :p

I took my intake off one time, and put it back on without clipping the maf sensor back in. Blew retarded amounts of smoke and I thought I blew my motor up LOL

Thats all well and good.

Felpro is a brand name.

I should have been more clear.

I am asking if he installed a MLS or a composite HG?

Ok thats a composite.

They will seal on a "iffy" surface finish for the most part.

I would say you would need to be warped .005 or more for you to be burning coolant with that HG.

Or have a realy horrid surface finish on the head or block.

Do you have a loss of coolant?

The stock gauge or the sensor that tells the gauge may no longer be accurate.

Over heating can sometimes damage the sensor for the gauge so it gives false readings to the gauge.

Did a compression test...

175... 175... 175... 65

haha That cylinder isn't even firing iguess...

Anyways, i pulled the head. and the head gasket looked fine, so i narrowed it down to the valves were shot and the smoke was caused by liquid going into that cylinder and it wasn't even firing so it just came out exhaust...

My friends and i got head that is resurfaced just out of machine shop ready to drop in..

You think that is what caused my white smoke?

Hi guys. I bought my first DSM a little while back and I guess from me talking about it 24/7 I inspired my girlfriend to want one as well. So we happened to find an older couple selling an automatic 1997 GST which my girlfriend absolutely loves! The car is completely stock down to the original 1997 stereo which is what I really like about the car. However, there are some issues with it. After letting it sit for about 10-15 mins it starts to wight smoke and gradually gets worse. The car has 164k on it and has apparently never had a rebuild which kind of struck me odd. The couple said that they bought it in 1996. I test drove it and it ran great. It had good power for a stock automatic GST also. As soon as you start driving the smoke goes away. My brother says he thinks it might be valve stem seals. I'm not sure so I wanted to ask DSMTUNERS what they thought! Any help is greatly appreciated. Also, what do you think the car would be worth?

you dont have to worry about it being a bad valve stem seals. the smoke would be blue because you would be burning oil. white smoke come alot from burned coolant. so you may be looking at the blown headgasket. take it to a show and asked them to do a leak down test. that show give u a clue on where the smoke is coming from

I have a rule when I'm buying a dsm never pay more than 800 bucks LOL. Iv owned 6 now and never payed more than 800 but that's just me.
Whereis it smoking from? Under the hood I assume?

Sure sounds like a hg. Bet youre loosing coolant right?
I dont know how it could be anything else. I dont think its possible for coolant to be burned in the turbo so it should be the HG.

Take the radiator cap off, start the car. WAIT make sure the car is coolant sure it's cool enough so the thermostat is not open. Ok now with the car running and the radiator cap off smell what ever is coming out of the cap weather it's smoke or steam if it smells even a hint like exhaust than its a HG. Watch your coolant level. Pull the plugs and see if their distorted if its a bad HG leak at least one plug will be different you will soon see. When water comes in contact with a firing plug it will sort of 'melt' the little prong it may just be gone all together.

well ive heard that it's hard to tell the difference between white and blue smoke. The guy who owns the car said that it's blue but I saw white.

LOL I paid 1300 for my first but it had a lot of goodies under the hood. But the smoke is coming from the exhaust. Said to be blue but looked white, but im no mechanic...

Also, what do you guys think of it having 164k and never been rebuilt? A tad bit high for a boosted car right? My other DSM I bought with 150k and had been rebuilt around 110k...

Than its an exhaust leak? I suppose if its got that many miles and never been torn into the exhaust gaskets could be deteriorating. Check those out.

Well mine has 148k and its never been rebuilt. Even though I'm going to rebuild it LOL But anyway, blue smoke is oil and white smoke is coolant. My best guess would the the hg since it hasn't been rebuilt, have you checked the coolant level?

If the smoke smells sweet its coolant burning. It should smell like pancakes and syrup LOL that's an easy way to tell if its coolant burning vs oil.:p
