hi guys i really need your help here. my 97 eclipse gs non turbo is making a whining noise from the engine, a mechanic told me that it was the power steering pump buy when i had it changed, the whining noise didn't go away. so if any of you guys had the same problem just please let me know how to fix it. Thank you.

Video would benefit us more than anything?

Could be a lot of different reasons, starting with belts. When was the last time you or they were changed out? Many other possible opinions are alternator bearing, tension bearing, you will have to try little different things. Try using a bar of soap on each belt and if the noise cuts out, then you now know where & what accs. belt or etc the problem is on.

thanks! I will post a video clip later on.. I had my timing done 6 months ago.. so are there any ways or steps on how to diagnose where the problem is coming from.?

you can use a bar of soap, if you think it is coming from the accessory belts. If you think it is coming from the inner timing cover, then you will need to either tear it down or you can get a car stethoscope and get to work....It is hard to say with actually being in front of the car.....

no, the sound started even before the ps pump were replaced. We thought it was the ps pump so we replaced it but it didnt go away. I will try that bar or soap and keep you upadated.

Here's the video clip of it. If you have any idea just let me know.. Thanks

yeah i will try doing that.. Thanks a lot!

Will it turn on without the alternator belt though?

Have you tried to remove one belt at a time? What does the timing belt look like? Sounds like something is rubbing against something, When you look at your timing belt through the inspection cover, move the timing cover either forward or backward and see if it isn't rubbing against it.
