Car runs normal for about 3-4 miles after it warms up, then whenever it is reved over 2k, there is this sound, whiche is between a whine and grind, that comes from my valve cover / belt area. I am totally lost as to what this could be. I just installed a 60trim bb turbo, o2dump, koyo radiator, slimfan, and all new gaskets around the turbo. Any help is greatly appreaciated.

A valve timing discrepancy does not account for your odd noise.

Nevertheless, I used to run retarded one tooth at track time; back w/ stock cams and a small 16G. Pulled like a scalded dog! all day long.

Just to be safe pull your oil filter and cut it open just to make sure your engine is not making metal. It kinda has the sound and location of the front ballance shaft coming apart. Don't ask me how I know.

Hope it's not but oil filters are cheep.

1. The marks are close, only one tooth off. If it were the timing marks, it would make noise all the time, not just over 2k and after being driven a while.

2. How can I check if it is the balence shaft? Can I just change my oil to see the shavings? If it is the balence shaft, would I need to do anything besides elimate them?

Thanks for the help.

Step one get a new oil filter, remove the old one drill a hole in the top of it to let it drain. After that put the filter in a vice (base end in the jaws) get a hacksaw and cut it open about 1/2" above the base. When the shell is off take the pleated element and with a box cutter (or some sharp inpelment) cut around the top and bottom of the pleats. Once cut remove the pleats from the center shell and give it a good look from outside in.

If it is full of sparkley bits you have made metal and stop right there somthing is coming apart. If it is clean install the new filter and press on.

If it has made metal depending how many miles the engine has on it at the least all the bottom end bearings should be changed and the oil pump also along with a elemantor kit(Flush the oiling system) If it is mid to high milage look at a major overhaul.

Fingers crossed it checks clean.

Ok, if I do this, wont the metal shaving from cutting it open make it hard to tell what is from the cutting and what is from the engine? The motor has about 130k on it. Maybe the 60trim was a bad idea...:( I will cut it open tomorrow. thanks for the help. Oh ya, I frogot to mention that my oil pressure is good untill the car starts making the sound, then it drops to 1/2 of its normal pressure.

There is no doubt the metal from cutting and from a engine coming apart are all togther different. what little you would get from cutting would be laying on top the rest will be deep in the pleats and pounded into little pieces.

Good luck and fingers crossed.

With half the oil pressure somthing is going on and the odds are not good.
