Which/What gauges should I get? [Merged 12-6]

I'd say boost and a logger, but if logger doesn't count then a wideband O2 setup, and if THAT doesn't count (because it's more then a gauge), then an EGT. It would be great to have all four tho.

Say it with me, B-O-O-S-T and E-G-T :thumb: . I do not count a logger (nor a wideband) as a gauge, however, it would be the first thing I would consider getting if I were you. If you take a gander at my mods list, one of my few current mods is a logger (no gauges yet for me). If you need an idea of what one looks like:

Even though I already had this on my previous DSM, it would still be a wise investment and an idea first "mod".

boost guage and EGT guages are your best bet.

the a/f is only for looks. it basically tells you when youre stoich(14.7:1) when youre idling, and it tells you when you hit the gas by going all the way rich, then when you let off by going to lean and thats about it. its about as accurate as the stock boost guage.

I totally agree with Thomas911, an A/F gauge is COMPLETELY for looks. You CANNOT tune with it, an EGT would be more tunable. If your car is tuned correctly a A/F would read RICH at wot 24/7. It will be the most useless mod. Unless you are going for appearence, then the LED looks cool I guess.

Gas gauge and a clock.

If the motor effs up enough to lose oil on one tank of gas (you DO check every time you fill, don't you?) in an amount that'll matter, it's done anyway. You'll feel, smell and hear overheating before there's damage. You feel your boost. Speed doesn't matter, because you're going too fast anyway. But a car will run out of gas without a sound, and of course you need to know when it's Wapner time.

ok im following the Tuning guide and the first thing im doing is buying a Boost Gauge. but im going to get a dual or triple. so which other gauges should i get with it ? A/F, Volts, EGT what do you have? and last off, I have heard that boost gauges can get "knocked off" calibration and i was looking at a used FAZE boost gauge and the mark wasn't on the 0 does that mean it isn't accurate? thanks and sorry if this is the wrong place to post if so feel free to move it thanks in advance

EGT for sure. If you get an AF, get a wideband AF... much more usefull. Also, which brand are you looking at? If you're looking into Autometer, I would buy the EGT gauge minus probe, and get the TRE probe, it's very quick. That's what I have/ :thumb:

Boost
EGT
Oil Pressure
Fuel Pressure

Whatever type of gauges you decided to get make sure that they have a good record for accuracy. If you're not going to spend the money for quality gauges then you're missing the point of having them in the first place.

I think im going to start off with a Boost/Vacuum, EGT, and A/F for starters. how do you hook up a fuel pressure and oil pressure gauge are they hard to install? im most likely going to get another set of gauges for the Radio area since i won't have a radio. thanks also what about oil temp gauge is that important?

Don't waste your time and money with the A/F gauge (unless you get the full wideband). I'd add an oil pressure gauge instead of the A/F gauge. The oil pressure gauge is actually quite easy to install, too.

Make sure the boost guage is a 30-0-30 or atleast include vacuum pressure and 30 psi of boost...about $55 for autometers..do not waste your time with used autometers though because they are most likely off and useless...you will need an EGT for later on tuning

I'd would probably do the following order

Boost
EGT
Oil Pres
Fuel Press (nice but not necessary @ first)
Water Temp (nice but not necessary)

If your on a budget I would do other upgrades before purchasing a W/B Gauge. IE: Logger, Exhaust, Intake, boost controller etc.

Its always good to see what your gauges tell you about your engine prior to doing any speed mods.

Its pretty straight forward, hardest part is probably running the wiring. Oil and Fuel pressure gauges normally have a 1/8 NPT sensors.

Oil Pressure: I would probably measure oil pressure @ the head, you can also measure it in the filter housing. Just unscrew one of the plugs in the head and screw in your oil sensor. Run your wiring. If you decide to plug into the filter housing just do some research first.

Fuel Pressure: There are several ways you can do this. Personally, I would probably just replace the banjo fitting with one that has a 1/8"NPT fitting on top of the banjo bolt. Again your sensor should be a 1/8" NPT fitting. Replace the bolt, screw in the fuel pressure sensor in and your set. Just make sure you depressurize the system first.

I personally went the route of autometer boost and oil pressure. Air/Fuel is pretty worthless because it would only be narrowband and I would keep the fuel pressure under the hood if you get an AFPR. Wiseman kpt4321 once said not to count solely on an egt guage as some 4gs have been known to have many problems at 1500 degrees yet some will run perfect at 1700 degrees. Besides with a logger you have abou 15 gauges right there including water temp. Your call man.

Well if anybody wants since its a guage thread, I have an autometer A/F guage and a boost guage that goes to 20 psi. I bought a PLX wideband and today I ordered a boost guage that goes to 30 psi. I plan on running at least 20 right after break in so current gauge isn't gonna cut it. They are both sport comp, black face with silver rim. PM me if anyone is interested.

Agree I would run boost/vac,fuel pressure and egt.Normal air fuel are a light show only.
But they do make small widebands now not sure though if they are the smallest size or not.Heck they even have that turbosmart boost controller in a guage format. But I like matching stuff so likey will just go with my autotmeters. And I think they are pretty accurate ,accurate enough for most purposes since you do most tuning with loggers and widebands anyway.I would say egt isn't that necessary if you have a wideband o2.Fuel pressure would be great to have..quickly tell you a lot at a glance. But fuel pressure guages are very pricey.!!

I just have Vac/Boost and going to get EGT....I think AF is pointless and pretty IMO

Hi, I quick wanted to ask you guys what you think.
