Which/What gauges should I get? [Merged 12-6]

you did mis interpret, i didn't say an aftermarket boost isn't necessary....i'm referring to the oil pressure guage....what's that gonna do for you? tell you that your motor blew when it was already too late??? that's why i had the arrow in my post.
 
I figured as much, but since the arrow was after both of the gauges, I just thought I would clarify for TDX so he didn't get confused! :thumb:

Boost, EGT, OIL PRESSURE.
I have seen aftermarket oil pressure gauges save a couple of engines after the oil filter backed off.
I didn't have one on my engine when it spun a bearing and may have saved a few parts if I had one.
I now do.
 
There are a few gauges which I consider necessary on an everyday basis, and a few which I just consider "saftety gauges" which are nice to glance at while driving to make sure things are all good.

For running and tuning the car:

30-0-30 boost gauge.
A/F gauge. --Why an A/F gauge when they really dont do anything more than blink? Well, honestly when you start changing variables, it becomes very helpful to adjust the low trims on the AFC while driving around town. I also use it to adjust my idle and such.

For safety:

100psi oil pres.
1600* F EGT should be good.

These gauges I don't really spend a lot of time looking at and using to adjust anything. THey are just nice to look at when WOT to make sure your EGT's aren't too high, or that your oil pressure isnt dropping or anything.

If you have to choose 3 gauges though, I would seriously ditch the oil. press. Although it can save your engine if you see the oil pressure dropping, most people don't look at it constantly enough to see the problem happening and shut the car off in time. The stock oil light worked for me when my oil filter housing seal blew. The oil light catches my attention much better than the needle of an aftermarket gauge.

if i were you, i would substitute an EGT gauge for that stupid AF gauge, EGT is way more accurate and gives u a better idea whats going on inside ur engine. i have tuned with an AF gauge before then hooked a wideband up to it and the tuning was way off, ever since then, i refuse to ever use an AF gauge, but its your call.
 
ive been kind of thinking of a second "usefull" gauge since I want to get rid of my techno show and move my gauges into a gauge cluster pod. ill have boost and im thinking oil pressure since I cant think of anything else usefull.

Fuel pressure will be mechanical and underhood, EGT or wideband A/F I wont need because DSMlink.

And I cant think of anything else possibly usefull to me.
 
since you said "important"...

dont get an air/fuel :nono:

id say if you are planning on modding/tuning the car you should get the egt gauge now...if thats farther down the road, get the oil pressure now. some people might disagree with that but thats my opinion.
as for me, my 93 tsi i bought boost, oil press, and egt all at once.
for my 95 tsi, buying an oil press and boost gauge
 
It should be a probe that you connect in to your oil pan. As for the a/f, it only helps if you have the wide band version. As for flashy light kudos, its a +

mechanical has oil going up to the gauge
electric has a sensor just like your stock one, then wire running back to the gauge
 
Order of importance (IMO)
1.Boost (do you have a MBC?)
2.EGT
3.Oil

Some girl was riding in my car and asked what the a/f gauge was for, I told her it was to hypnotize her into taking her clothes off... didn't work. Don't waste time with the A/F. I'm getting rid of mine for an Oil.

I was wondering what other gauges i am going to need. i already have a boost gauge and know that i need an egt gauge. but what other ones do i NEED. my plans are to go with an fp green in the future. the reason i am asking is because i am going to go ahead and by a pillar mount because my ghetto bent steel with velcro holding it to the dash A. doesnt look good and B. the adhesive on the velcro is starting to melt. :thumb: i was just wondering whether to get a double or triple pod. any help would be apreciated thanks
 
You don't NEED any other gauges but an oil or fuel pressure gauge might be ones to think about.
