what size tires would fit on a 18' rim with 7.5 width and i believe 38mm offset. I have 235/40 now and they eventually rub the rear control arm bad.

If 235/40/18 is rubbing on a 2G (by the way, that vertical thing is the knuckle, not a control arm), then I doubt that the offset is +38mm. And we can't help unless we are sure what the offset really is.

ok maybe it wasnt that, im not quite sure actully, i cant find any info on the rim or net about the rim to what the offset would be, all i know is that those size tires rub that knuckle. and was just wondering what would be a skinnier tire i could get that would fit on that size rim.

the offset will effect which tire fits on the rim? i thought that was just the distance it went out from where it intersects with the rotor assembly? I just need to know if something like a 215/40 or 215/35 could physically fit on the rim. If the offset does effect this, my appologizes and i will try and locate this information.

No, offset does not affect the fit of the tire to the rim. Many people, myself included run 235/40/18's with 38-40mm offset. If you are not sure that your offset is 38mm, then it is likely much more, causing your rubbing problem.

the only number i could closely find is 42, but im not sure if that is offset cause no where does it indicate as such. Should i be fine with a 215/40 tire?

No, that 42 might be it. That's about where I'd expect those tires to start rubbing.

If it is, then a 225/40/18 should be fine. You not only gain 5 mm from the tire's width, but by shrinking the diameter, you gain a bit more.

Well, no. The smaller the safer, when the only issue is rubbing. But I wouldn't go all the way down to a 215 unless I had to. Heck, if you change the question to being "what should I do?" then the answer is easy and cheap: go to PepBoys and get some spacers.

If you could roll at all on the 235’s but had occasional rubbing, it is likely that you have less than the 4mm clearance necessary to allow for tire flex. 225/40/18's should have an additional 9mm of clearance over 235/40/18's (because the profile height is less as well as the width).
