for any Eclipse with OE 16" wheels here is something to consider

A 225/50-16 tire size has a minimum rim width of 6", tire will work best on 7 or 7.5" wide wheels. No advantage putting this size on the stock 6" wide wheels. They will fit but the sidewall deflection will actually hurt the cornering ability of the car

i am getting some 215/45/17s yokohama es100's installed this week i will let you guys know how they are i have great things about them already

I was wondering others opinion on some tires, I think I have it narrowed down to the Khumo 712's or the sumitumo htr+. The sumituma's are $25 or 26 more shipped to my house than the khumo's are, but the ratings are better. I have the khumo's now and have had them a year with like 15,000 miles I would guess. They were not bad tires, I think my lack of a camber kit for about 6 months ate them up quickly but that is now taken care of. Let me know what you think about my two choices.
Thanks JB P.s.- the size is 225/45/17

it's hard to compare and apple to an range or a DSM to a Nissan or a BMW to a Porsche

the Kumho 712 is a summer only performance tire while the Sumitomo is an all-season performance tire ... so I don't think you can get a good comparison of those tires each one does something better than the other

I live in NC and we get a little snow a couple times a year, so that isn't too important, I want something that will stick good while at the drag strip, but not wear out fast. I also like to corner at higher speeds if the driving conditions permit it.
Thanks again, JB

The new Kumho MX is supposed to be far superior to the 712's. I saw a comparison with Michelin pilots and Bridgestone KD's. The MX was right there with the other 2, but costs les than 1/2 as much! It actually finished ahead of the pilot's barely. They are a little more than the 712's, but I am looking at them or the azenis' for my next tires.

The MX also have a 220 TW rating instead of 280 which the 712 has..

then i guess we are agreed on this :D

Scorcher's don't have any traction, that is why they don't use them. They are just for rice show.

Yeah, the MX's have a lower tread wear rating. It's a performance tire! Azenis' have a low tread rating too. Grippy means you are going to wear them out faster, unless you put more tread on them, but then you get tread squirm.

i thought that the scorcher had good traction, the tread patern seems to have a large contact pad. if anyone has actually had experience with this tire could ya plz tell me what ya think about it. thanks

Another DSM member in town had them. They have like a 320 tread wear rating! No tire with a rating like that is going to have good traction. Sticky=fast wear. That is all there is to it. You also have to look at tread depth.

i see your point JET, i never payed any attention to the tread wear rating. still, its a cool tire for a strictly show car IMO.

not entirely true

Firehawk SZ50 EP's 340 treadwear rating
Potenza RE730's 300 treadwear rating

both offer excellent traction

Like I said, you also have to look at tread depth. I am not sure about the 730, but I know the SZ50 has deep tread. This helps tread life, but gives you more squirm. If the blocks are large it is not as bad also. Neither of them are in the same class as the Azenis, KD's, or MX's though.
