I am seeing many of you guys getting a lot more horsepower by using race gas. Which octane rating do you guys recommend? I went to a local dealer and he offers vp racing fuel for my car which is I think 100 octane.

100 octane - Unleaded (76 Cool Blue): you can run this with a 3" cat.
110 octane - Leaded: Run this with out a cat, it will clog it up fast. Don't use this too often either, it's not o2 sensor friendly. It will clog up the sensor and screw up your o2/fuel readig, thus giving you crappy mileage and performance.
C16: Same shit as above

*You are going to have to tune a little leaner than usual. I'd have a wideband to your disposal...just to make sure things are done right. If you are doing it Ghetto fab, use egt's and a logger to see where you are at (thats if no other tool is to your disposal).

I've used both VP103 unleaded and C16. Both worked about the same in my car. In fact, a local DSM guru said the 103 might actually be better on this engine up to about 500HP, because it burns "faster" or something like that, compared to the C16.

I use Sunoco 116 in my car, never had a problem and dynoed over 500whp with it. Unlike a N/T car, its hard to over-octane a turbo car, as long as you lean out the map and add in the timing as necessary. And theres always ELF fuel, if you can get your hands on it and afford it LOL.

That just means you need to run less timing advance on 103 then C16. C16 is better because it has higher MON rating, therefore more resistant to detonation.

How much was VP103? I have a hard time getting my local distributor to give me price  He sells C16 for $10 and change.

At our last dyno day, I had some knock even on straight C16. OMG (stupid postage stamp SMIC and boost leaks).

The local VP station has 103 for about $6.75 a gallon. C16 is almost $9.

That's a good price. If I could find a place that would take me seriously I'd be running it in my car.

So vp103 it is. Dealer said it was sensor friendly. Yea Im going to lean it out more. Im going to use the dsmlink as my tuning tool.

I use C16 and I have ran 35psi w/ 33deg total timing on a 9.5:1 motor(.020 over 4g63 unstroked). Although I have extensive modifications that most likely provide me that benifit. I have heard from a VP rep that with their new "Import"(thats the name) fuel you can run as much timing as you want without predetonation. I have yet to try it because it is almost $18 a gallon and for that price I can survive with what C16 allows me.

I tried VP import, didn't notice any difference over C16.

For that matter, I ran the same tune on my old car with 92 octane + methanol injection as I did on Union 76 110 octane. Just my 2 cents, if you like a lot of power on the street it is a very viable alternative to running a tank full of race gas.

It's unleaded. It has specific gravity almot the same as VP Import and higher then C16 so you're going to have to lean it out quite significantly. How much, I don't know.

GEEZ! I thought our prices were bad, untill i seen this thread... I pay 4.00 a gal for 110 :D

Yeah, wow I pay $5.50/gal for C16/110. We also get 93 up here for $1.80/gal right now.. the prices have been dropping... which is good. I hope they stay that way for next year's race season. :dsm: :thumb:

Would it be better to mix the race gas with a quarter tank of 93 or straight up race fuel? Later.

Damn, that's a good price. Maybe I should order some out of state. Too bad I live in an apartment and can't store 55 gal. drum.

How much boost and timing do you plan on running? A 50/50 cut of C16 and 93 octane gives you about 105 octane, which is enough to run a lot more boost than pump gas. IMHO, unless you plan on pushing 35+ pounds of boost a cut of race to pump works great. Saves you a good amount of money, and you don't have to buy drums as often.
