which is better T-25 or 14b

I've been reading about how some 2g owners have been taking out there t-25's and putting in 14b's. And I was wondering ,Are the 14b's better and are'nt they smaller because they came from the 1G. So why are 2g owners swapping them out? I know this is a stupid question and I know it's going to have a very simple answer but it's been bugging me.:D
 
One of the biggest mysteries is why Mitsubishi put the bigger and better flowing throttle body elbow, exhaust manifold and o2 housing on the 2G cars mated to the T25. A T25 is a step above a hairdryer- anything would be an upgrade. However, if you're going though all the work to install a MHI turbo in place of the Garrett, I'd consider using something larger than a 14B. Even a Small 16G would pull much harder than a 14B.
 
I just bought a gst and started examining the car and notice that the turbo didn't look stock. I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to define what kinda turbo I had. I think it's a 14b but I wanted to make sure. I'm positive it's not a t25 unless they make one that needs a j-pipe.
 
That's what mine looks like (1g turbo) but are there any numbers I should go by? I've found pics but no sure way on how to differentiate the two. Ill post pics up tomorrow if I can get some.
 
Serial numbers on the actual turbo. Fins of the turbo inlet will tell you a lot as well. The 14b is baller compared to the t25. I'm one of those guys. I had a boost controller and wore out the t25 and I can swear it is very impossible to blow your motor on. Maybe that is why Mits put that on the 7 bolts... to conserve the engine and still call it turbo ROFL

But again if you are going to go thru the trouble of swapping, then yes go at least a 16g. Only reason I got a 14b is because Justin (jusmx) only had those in stock AND a 1g awd was pulling 12's with a 14b :thumb:
 
I'll add some 2-cents into here. Generally when a car is being designed, they are more interested in drivability than anything. The t25 is a VERY quick spooling turbo since it so small, thus making turbo lag virtually non existant. Turbo lag was a big complaint. That's probably why they chose to use that turbo.... and were still getting similar power ratings as the previous cars.

in regards to the question, the 14b would be a nice upgrade... if its not already on there.. going off your one post. ;)

In regards to this, I remember reading an article somewhere that described the manufacturers of the 2g DSM as trying to give it a more "muscle" feel. As in making it feel more torquey like a 6 or 8 cylinder. Naturally, a small turbo kind of emulates that effect.
 
nevertheless the t-25 was never designed to be "smaller" like some on here have said.. its supposed to be equivalent i dont know if the idea that is supposably a worse turbo that people just think its small or what but i have a 2g and i swapped my t-25 for a 14b when the garrett went bad and lets just says i wish i would have saved my money... the 14b made no difference in my opinion i kinda wish i would've saved my time and not done the extra work to install that tubro... my vote is for the 16g whether it be big or small, like jusmx141 said a 16g will make much more power that either of those turbo's

It doesn't work better for you? At stock boost levels they are probably very similar. To be honest, at stock boost level my 16g felt like my T-25. Run your 14b at like 18-19 psi (t-25 cant even do that topend) and it will be a big difference.

Yeah stock boost level the turbo will feel similar. If you had the supporting mods like I do, you would not underestimate the 14b :hellyeah:
 
Turbo lag was a complaint on what car? The 1st gens? That's stupid because the 14b spools insanley fast.

Agreed. For a turbo that can push 20 lbs at a drop of a dime, I have no complaint about turbo lag.

Just to clear some things up:

The 14b is equal in size, IF NOT smaller, compared to the T25. I believe the T25 has a slightly bigger inlet.

The compression on the 1g's is higher compared to the 2g, hence why the stock psi is higher on the 2g.

T25 is capable of 0-16 psi effectively.
14b is capable of 0-22 psi effectively, depending on what type of intercooler you have.

Completely false.

The concept of using the T25 on a 2G combined with higher compression pistons was to improve the car's torque curve. The lower compression 1G motor and larger 14B turbo made the car feel "lazy" to some critics who want instant power for passing without downshifting on the highway.

The T25 is small with very little airflow potential, and it's horribly unreliable when pushed to anything beyond the stock boost level....the weak thrust plate just can't handle it.

Do you understand turbocharging basics?

Small turbos work better at lower boost levels, large turbos work better at higher boost levels. If you installed a 14B and it felt lazy at the same stock boost level your T25 was operating at, you're absolutely right....the 14B's bigger wheel size made it slightly laggier, and it probably wasn't moving as much air as the T25 at the same boost level. A 16G would've even been worse.

One thing you should've noticed, however, is the 14B's ability to make more power in the higher RPMs than your T25. This is because the 14B compressor is more efficient at generating air as the RPMs climb, while your engine was gobbling up every drop of air the T25 could squeak out. If you're running above stock boost levels on the T25, you'll notice a significant drop in boost in the higher RPMs as a result.
 
so what if any mods would I have to do to my car to maximize the use of the 14b turbo?
I also wanted to ask how is the wastegate actuator supposed connected to the wastegate? I've seen cotter pins used but this one doesn't have a hole for it. I had used a push on lock but that ended up popping off when i reved the motor.
 
if you have the money go with the 16g.
i swapped my t25 out for a 14b. it disappointed me. it pulls a bit harder but it has A LOT of turbo lag.
but then again it is only boosting 11 psi. i want to boost it up more to 15 psi. but i have to break into the new head.
