Which direction should I go?

My DSM has been down and out for about six months now. It is beyond frustrating and I'm ready to get it back on the road. Here's where my problem lies. My block spun a rod bearing. I ordered a new crank , main and rod bearings , pistons and piston rings. The mechanic took my old block out and sent it to the machine shop to be assembled. (which would consists of taking the old crank out and putting the new one in , replacing the bearings , and installing the pistons and balancing everything). It's been three weeks since I've heard from him , so I decided to drop by tonight. So he says since it's the holidays and blah blah that the machine shop is taking forever and yada yada. So I asked him how much the machine shop would charge for the work . He said just a little under $1000. Now Am I over-exaggerating about this absurd price or is this 'normal' for the work I'm having done. I figure I can buy a short block for $1000 if that's the case. At this point I'm just beyond and am totally turned off about my car because this has become a complete nightmare. If anyone can offer me advice or recommend a normal machine shop in New Jersey , I would greatly appreciate it guys.

That does seem high since you already bought all the parts and all they are doing is bascially rehoning and assembling it. IDK it sounds like you are already commitited to this shop but if you haven't I would call around to find out about that price.

Little under $1000 for just the machine work or all of the mechanics labor + the cost of the machine work?

I have to find out wether or not the block is just sitting there, which I assume it is. So i wouldnt necessarily say Im commited. Thats why i really feel I should shop around because I thought it was awfully high considering I have all the parts. And its $1000 for the machine shop just to install the parts/the machine work in the short block( not putting the engine in the car , the mechanic will do that).

$1000 for machine work and engine assembly is outrageous. I guess I'm in the wrong industry to make money.

I would have guessed more like 1000 for everything to be done.

A grand for assembly and dropping the motor sounds right. Assembly of a shortblock (block/crank/rods/pistons) for a grand is insane. Call them and find out the exact details, then get it in writing. A $10 ring compressor, $50 stand, $40 torque wrench and a few hours of reading and you could assemble it yourself.

I don't have the time for assembly but, I will definately give them a call first thing Friday. My number one resolution now is to don't get scammed with this assembly.

that sounds really high if all they are doing is putting the thing together, machine work is pricey, but not that pricey you could acually assemble it yourself just check the oil clearances and all that to verify you got all the right parts. then again if they have to align hone the mains or fix a crack in the block or do any other repair work it could add up get a detailed estimate first
