I did a search and couldnt find it, I think I have seen it before but, here it goes.

What cars come with the Eprom ecu? Is it random? Later years? I don't understand?

Mistsu do it so they could do changes if they needed?

As I understand it, all 90's, most 91's, 92-94 pretty much no. Then again in 95, some 96's, etc.

I guess what they do is put the E-prom ECU's in first year model cars incase they need to make changes either during the production run or to address a recall issue, then from there they become more scarce as they get the tuning etc proofed out in the real world.

Here guys, everyone should read this, kind of refresh themselves on what years have what.

Difference Between Years

1990

* Inagural model year of the DSM
* Pop-up headlights
* Some high-end models had wheel covers
* All ECUs had EPROMS
* Front brakes change during the model year
* 1.8L models have the 4G37 engine, all others have the 4g63 engine

1991

* ECU changes mean that 1991+ ECUs don't operate the 1990 tachometer correctly
* Most ECUs had EPROMS
* First model year with ABS available. ABS not available with limited-slip differential (LSD)
* All high-end models had alloy or mesh wheels
* First year of the Galant VR-4

1992

* Non-popup headlights introduced on all models
* The first AWD Lasers were introduced
* Few (or no) ECUs have EPROMS
* ABS now available with LSD
* The engine changes from the 6-bolt version to the 7-bolt version in April
* Second and final year of the Galant VR-4

1993

* Big Brake Kit, 2-piston front calipers become standard on turbo models
* 7-bolt engines are now standard
* No ECUs have EPROMS
* Diamond-Star Motors ceases to exist

1994

* All cars built to California emissions standards
* The last year of the 1G car and the 1.8L NT models
* The last year of the Plymouth Laser

1995

* The inagural year of the 2G DSM
* Significant changes to the engine, body, and electronics
* New transmissions
* All ECUs have EPROMS
* Non-turbo models are based on the Chrysler 420A engine instead of the Mitsubishi 4G63 engine.
* OBD-II becomes standard on DSMs, along with two oxygen sensors
* Mitsubishi begins using some substandard crankshafts, leading to crank walk

1996

* The first year of the convertible Spyder
* The Mitsubishi 4G64 engine is offered in the Spyder models only
* ECUs stop having EPROMS

1997

* Additional body changes from the 1995/1996 models
* Minor changes to the ECU code

1998

* Minor changes to the ECU code
* After many years, Mitsubishi issues a recall on the AWD DSM transfer case
* The last year of the Eagle Talon

1999

* The last year of the 2G car, and of the 4G63/AWD DSM platform

There we go guys, i hope this helps, if you have any problems or questins with this, let me know.

From my past expeirence, all 1990s had E-prom ECUs. I had a 90' TSI FWD, and that had an EPROM ECU. I could be wront, but as my understanding goes, all 1990 DSMs have an E-prom ECU. If i am wrong, someone please correct me. It could have been by my 1990 Talon had an E-prom.

I'm sure Steve or someone will chime in here with the technical explaination to this....however, I can attest to the fact that I, personally, have a 1990 GSX, and that it does, in fact have a 1990 non-EPROM ECU installed in it at this very moment. :thumb:

I wish they all came w/ EPROMs....That way, I wouldn't have to be searching for one so that I can run DSMLink. haha.

edit -- Also, I believe that the only ECU that is (almost) guaranteed to have EPROM is the GVR4. According to my info, even if you take two ECUs with the same model number, one could be EPROM and the other not.

I don't think so...

No year has all EPROM ECUs and there seems to be some out of every 1G model year turbo car. I haven't seen as many from the non-turbo cars except for the last run.

As best I can tell they made EPROM ECUs for product development and qualification (emissions). Once they passed the goverment tests they could commit to having production mask-programmed CPUs (software included when they put the transistors on the silicon) made. It could be months from the time you send in the order to seeing chips so the factory used EPROM ECUs to get cars out the door.

As far as I can tell this it true. The GVR4 was a limited production car and every one had a EPROM ECU originally.

There is actually a similar list as posted above within a couple of clicks to dsmtuner.com's home page. A little over half way down is a link to dsmtuner.com's model guide and then most the way down there is a link called "changes between model years" that takes you to a simliar page. I am not saying who is right or wrong just stating where the information can come from, here's a link http://members.shaw.ca/costall/1000Q/answers-makeandmodel.htm#whatarethedifferencesbetweencars

Thanks for posting the link...I knew I had seen that list around somewhere before.... :)

However, I think it's pretty obvious at this point as to "who is right or wrong", seeing as how I have a 1990 non-eprom sitting in my garage at this very moment....Kinda blows their whole "All ECUs had EPROMS in 1990" Theory, huh? ;)

I knew that he was quoting Sean Costal 1000 Already Answered Questions list. I was't faulting him just making it clear that both were wrong. Sean has a lot of good information there and some bad information. This is one example of some bad information. That's bound to happen in something as large as the 1000AAQ

you all can add me to the list of 90's without eprom... Yea I was pretty mad when i had read on here a while back that all 90's had an eprom ecu then i take it all out and take off the cover to find out that it's a non eprom. oh well tho. no problem, we just need to update everyone's statements LOL.

I will also prove that list wrong stating that my 1993 Talon AWD does have an EPROM and it was there from the factory. I know the previous 2 owners, and they were the first people to mod my car and neither of them swapped in an EPROM ECU.

thank you i will check that what year did you say you need

Oh, are you talking about *your* ECU? You will need a 90 in your car. :thumb: I was confused for a minute, haha.

ask because I really dont want to have the pains that come with useing a 91 Eprom in a 90. gawh damn 90's I sware.. Some times I love haveing the first year but times like this I hate it.

I'm either going to get the DSMLink or reprogram the ECU via dsmchips. Haven't made up my mind yet but either way I need a Eprom ECU, and im in Iraq so it's not like I can hit up junkyards..

Is there such a thing as a 90 Eprom? If not whats the best way to get a 91 Eprom and have all my guages etc. still work?

Yes, but good luck finding one for cheep.

The 1991-94 eProms ECUs are much more plentiful and a very easy upgrade.
