Having this same problem. Though I never have any starting problems at all and battery never goes dead, seems the alternator only works when its cold or at certain load points. If I'm above 2500 rpm it works perfect, cruising at 2000 lights get dim like its only charging 12v. If I'm doing 2000 rpm with TC locked up and give it enough gas to put it under high load lights will brighten and blower motor speed up like it starts to charge even though I'm still doing 2000 rpm.
Charge light never comes on at any point even with initial key on light check. Tested bulb to work in cluster just fine with power probe. According to AllData the relay is supposed to be under the A/C hoses on the left fender. Mine appears to be missing.
Although I just had to change my alt because the regulator went bad in my other and at times it would not charge or it would overcharge to 19v. But when it didn't charge the charge light would work then. Now it never works. With key on light check or with the engine running without the alt plugged in not charging.
When I get a relay and if it fixes(or if it doesn't and I find something else that fixes it) my problem OP, I will report back and let you know so maybe it will help you out.
