When can YOU hear spool on 16g?

Just installed 16g and it seems to spool at around 3500 which seems kind of high. I might just be used to the 2700 spool on my 14b. When does your 16 spool?

Wow, thanks for all the replies guys!! There is no boost leaks that I can find, but I have not checked for any exhaust leaks. I will have to do that asap. As of right now, im waiting for the ngks to come in so I can actually get real results. I made the mistake of being impatient and buying some crappy bosch or something.

As far as "hearing" the turbo, my Small 16G doesn't become very audible until it's making 8psi or so despite having a knockoff Injen intake and K&N FIPK. Of course there isn't much of a "whistle" because I'm still on the OEM 2G MAS which muffles the sound a bit.

My 90 6-bolt is pretty much stock except for ported 2G mani and 02 housing, and running a big 16G from Ebay. I was disappointed to find as well that it did not spool until about 3500, a big difference from the 14b. I do hear somewhat of a high pitched whistle as it spools up. I did a boost leak test and the only hiss I hear is from the throttle blade shaft when I wiggle it back and forth, which needs to be rebuilt, but is not a very big leak.

I figured the slower response was due to the lower efficiency of the compressor, and the very restrictive stock exhaust. I want to swap to a 2.5" exhaust at least and was hoping that would improve my spool response. I don't see any indication of an exhaust leak between the mani and the turbo, but I know these don't tend to seal very well. Since my boost leak is really small, do you think an exhaust leak could make that much difference? What else should I look for? Thanks!

You're problem is most likely not an exhaust leak, but the cheap ebay turbo. I bought my old car with an ebay 16g on it and it spooled like you said, around 3500rpm and I could hardly feel it hit. Switched to a genuine evo 3 16g and it started to spool at 2500rpm and hit 10x harder. So my advice, ditch the turbo for a genuine 16g. You won't regret it!

My small 16 would hit 16-17 lbs right at 2700.

on my MHI e16g, i reach full boost at about 32-3500 rpm at 20pbs boost on 91
