I was in the process of changing my bad rear pass wheel bearing and when i got to taking off the old one it stuck on and wouldnt come off the axle, i bought a 100dollar hub puller....didnt work. Borrowed my friends huge air/gas torch, wouldnt come loose. Any other ideas anyone? or should i just buy a whole new rear axle and stick my new wheel bearing on that? thanks :talon: :dsm:

where is this mitsugraveyard? i really need an axle now, i have no transportation, my cars just sitting in the yard with a torched up bearing and axle. also, if you know anyone with a rear pass awd axle for sale or anyplaces with some forsale please tell me asap. i wanna get the beast driving :D thank you

The hub assembly needs to be taken to a machine shop, preferably and automotive machine shop. They basically cut the old bearing off because the race bonds to the shaft. Then the new bearing needs to be pressed on. I got my bearings from Rockauto.com for about $93 each. You can do it at home if you have the proper tools, but I didn't. The machine shop only charged $10. It was well worth it. Rockauto will get the parts to you really fast too.

Remove the big bolt holding the axle on and the 4 bolts in the rear of the hub. Whack the poop out of it until it falls off. A new axle would be pointless since you have to remove the old mess anyway.

good luck!

i already have all the junk off (4 bolts in back, big bolt, drums out of way), tis all ready and ive been hammering it/torching it and it wont come off. plus i bought a hib remover like stated b4 it wont come off. and i already have a new wheel bearing ready just wont come off.

also i went to rockauto and i cant find a REAR axle pass side. only fronts. also how do i know if mine is locking or not? i found a place with the axle for 75 but i dont know if mine is locking or not... the choices are...
non locking w/ abs
non locking w/o abs
locking

i have abs and a viscous limited slip diff does that mean im locking?

so you think i should just not buy a new axle? just take it off with bearing attatched to a machine shop and have them press it out and the new one in?? i just dont see how itll come off

Everyone goes thru the same pain trying to remove those damned things. I used a 3 lb mini-sledge and whacked the hooey out of it until it gave up and fell off.

I have a extra bearing because I bought 2 and the 1st one was such a PITA that I am waiting until spring to do the second one.

Read thru some of the threads and see how other folks might have removed the things. I think brute force is the only approach.

I had the same problem (suprise!) I had my cousin who works at a macine shop cut the entire hub off of the axle. Worked well, besides the fact that I had to pick up a new hub and bearing.

Hope that helps.

i guess im going to jus take off the axle and have it pressed out. i have a whole wheel bearing assembly/hub so i dont care what they do to it as long as its off and new is on :) also, one question about the axle, i got it off and that last boot in back (connected to diff) wont go through the whole where the cv joint and bearing connected. any ideas? or do i have to take of the tie rod and crap?? thanks alot guys

Good luck on finding an axle for the rear. Had to replaced my rear passanger side wheel bearing and axle and finding an axle was a pain. Of course you can get one right from the dealer for $800 for a bran new one but screw that. Finally found a good used one for $100 after buying 2 other used ones that were in just as bad of condition as mine that i pulled out.

i see no one has posted here in a while but for those searching threads it may help. the question was how do i know if the axle is locking, answer is if the shaft going into the rear diff has two different sized spline sets, the parts stores (which more than likely have no access to this part) refer to it as locking or not, mitsubishi refers to it as limited slip or not. the one i have in my 95awd is mits part # mr176803 (if you call eagle with this part number they will tell you its discontinued, call mits and they can get it for between 180 and 300, depending where you live or most distributors online sell it for right around 200), with limited slip and with abs. hope this helps someone
