Its about time that I rebuild my motor. Its an AWD 5 speed. I plan on upgrading the turbo sometime in the near future. I want to do this rebuild/swap as cheap as I can but still be able to hodl some power. I would just rebuild the 7 bolt but im scared wen I install an upgraded clutch that it will start to walk on my fresh rebuild. Ive looked into 6 Bolts. I can find a motor with about 40k on it for about 1200-2000 and then it will cost me about 800-1000 to have someone do the swap. Then I will be upgrading a clucth also. I really dont know what I should do with my car. Can I just get a 6 bolt shortblock and use the rest from my 7 bolt? I am looking for the best performance/price ratio. All you out there that are experienced with this please help me out. IM looking to do this asap so it depends on when I get info from this thread. Thanks for any help. Thanks

it will cost you more than that to do the swap if you pay someone elso to do it the motor will be around $1500, the labor will be around $800, not to mention all the 1g parts you need to install the 1g motor. that will be another $600-$1000. then to run properly without any cels you will need somesort of ems like dsmlink because of the phantom knock. type in a search for "6 bolt swap" and you should get mostly all of your answers.

Getting just the 7 bolt rebuilt I was looking at about 500 in parts and 500-800 in labor. For a 6 bolt swap I was looking at around 1200-1800 for a motor and about 800 in labor. Why would I need a dsmlink or ems?? I dont see any need for it.

that is just from what i have read and from what i have been told. you usually get a cel thrown when you do a 6bolt swap because you would be running a 1g cam sensor on a 2g ecu and it throws a random missfire code. i am not sure exactly what the ecu is looking for when it does that. maybe someone can elaborate or you can do a search.
you are also forgeting these parts to complete the 1g to 2g swap (taken directly from the magnus site: 1G CAS (91-92 Optical Effect, 93-94 Hall Effect)
1G Oil Cooler (90-92 MD 157670 6bolt water cooled oil cooler)
1G Water Pump
1G Oil Pump/Front Case
1G Timing Belt necessities
2G Engine mount (modified) use 2G engine mount trimmed, with 1G tensioner arm
1G Timing Belt Covers (modified)
1G 90-92 6-bolt block (with whatever internals)
1G 6-bolt Flywheel
2G Starter Mounting bracket
1G Water Pipe
1G lower radiator hose
1G Thermostat housing/ Water Neck
1G 6-bolt oil pan Balance shafts (remove them or keep em, its up to you, we take them out)
2G Alternator
2G Power Steering Pump
2G A/C 2G Belts

so that adds to the cost of your build.

Just get the 7-bolt rebuilt. Crankwalk does happen but I think it is highly overrated. If your 7-bolt does walk and you are forced to get a new block, thats the time to worry about the swap.

Spend 1500 on a 2G and have it walk in 5hrs or under 250 miles and then spend 1800 for a 1G.

Yea, good call :thumbdown

I've seen way too many rebuilt 7-bolts walk. You right.....factory virgin engine CW is probably overrated. A lot of reports of CW are from rebuilds.
Everytime those 50k,115k, 130k, 160k 7-bolt engines gets a rebuild they WALK. Every f'n time. I saw a well know and respected 2G pioneer build 3ea 7-bolt blocks in a row.....each with a different fix...before the Magnus Re-wire became public. They all walked in under 5hrs run time or 250 miles. He was so pissed and frustrared at spending over 5k and losing two months of weekends and having the same problem. He folded and gave his DSM and all parts related to it to the friends that helped him. He is a nuclear engineer for the military with money out his ass and he wouldn't build a 7-bolt again. Why would you?
