What should I be doing with $5000?

Hello All,

I am of course new to this so I've got a lot of questions. Well it is pretty simple actually... :D

I have a 99 GSX with 110,000 original miles that has a cracked trans as of November. Well I have decided to let my local technical school have it as a project for next year but we obviously want to tune it.

So here it is:

What would you suggest I do for the $5000 I can dump into it and get me as close to 400HP as possible?

I know all new intake and exhaust pipes and manifolds, FMIC, bigger turbo, new axles for the power increase but as far as internals, I'm a little slow.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!!!

I am also aware of the engine basics as far as rebuilding the engine, new belts, new water pump, etc.

Thanks!!!

I say invest that money so you can make some money off your money. But first fix your problems, if any on your car. invest it and wait a bit..

yea have patience because you can sell that 2g you have and with all that money you could find one already built for 4-6000 but thats legit with all receipts and all.. or if i were you id sell it and go to an 04 - 06 sti call it a day... good luck bro.. think wise..

I read the upgrade path and the "Basic HP Upgrades" section lists the parts I would need to achieve 400HP. All of it sounds great but any suggestions on specific parts/manufacturers/kits that would be good for the project. It's a bunch of high school kids doing the work so I don't want anything too overwhelming for them.

Well this was my first car so I want to give it a far treatment and the lady I bought it from barely drove it (48,000 miles after 8 years). I wanna build it myself and is why I originally bought the car ### it was stock with low miles...

I know people on here know more than I do about upgrades...

high school kids? hopefully they have some type of insurance if something goes wrong LOL

well.. all you really need is:

fmic
255 fuel pump
afpr
evo3 16g turbo
1000cc injectors
dsmlink
wideband
boost gauge
and fiiiine tuning

anything with timing can reach goals

search and read around or best bet is to look at some members set ups that range in the 350+hp

Just my thoughts...

Whats the compression on the motor? If its in good condition, use it until it dies. If it needs rebuilt then go Fresh 6 bolt rebuild w/ stock internals. Either was add a Mitsubishi MLS headgasket and ARP headstuds for insurance.

E16G turbo
1000cc injectors
255 fuel pump
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator
Front Mount Intercooler
3" Exhaust
Port your stock exhaust manifold and 02 housing
DSMLink
Wideband 02
Manual Boost Controller
Replace your clutch.

Tune on E85

These are just your power mods, you still need to address your brakes, suspension, gauges etc,..

Have fun and plan on stuff to break.

Maybe give the 5 grand to Josh so he can finally get a dsm again and we won't have to deal with him whining about not having one anymoreLOL

There ya go, even better. Give Josh the five grand to track that bastard down and show him how Army men take care of asshole's that screw them over like that:hellyeah:

Good ideas as usual. The lower amount of money I can spend the better. I'm not worried about the kids ### the teachers there and its free labor!!

I have already considered new shocks, brakes, and axles...

I'm open to all the suggestions I can find!!!

Any internals I should be looking at?

internals can hold as long as the timing is good but the internals arent thaaat forgiving incase of knock.... if in case go with forged internals
good combo and people with actual parts can fill in

JE or Wiseco pistons and eagle h beam rods

they are more forgiving to knock and mistakes incase .. but that could be the last step IIIF something goes wrong LOL

At least you are being smart and doing it right the first time. There are way too many people that don't put thought into it and just start buying random parts and never planning it out. Hope your build goes well man.

Glad I can find a reliable place to get suggestions... I tried emailing Slowboy Racing and heard no response...

Yeah this forum is great. Read as much as you can here and you will be amazed at how much you learn without having to make a single post LOL. And if you have questions or anything that you can't find answers for, most members here are more than willing to do what they can to help you out.

Why do you need new axles? Have you even built he car for 250 hp yet? Do you even know what 400 hp is and what it entails?

Yes I do but I have heard before that the stock axles aren't good for anything far above stock power. Of course I could have been misinformed.

Also no it is not built for 250HP yet as it is still stock.

Great, then build this car for 250 HP before you worry about 400 HP. This question has become quite annoying and stupid, it pops up 10 times a week and 95% of you never do it. Someone who wants 400 HP asks how to get 400 HP, not what to do with 5,000.00 to get 400 HP. Sounds to me an awful lot like "I don' really have a ton of money, so I probably really can't afford a 400 HP AWD car and the insane upkeep it requires."

Pay down any debt if you have it, then go straight for the maintenance stuff first, always nice to update the toolbox & have a bunch of oil & filters on hand as well as a spare set of tires too. Hows the compression on the motor? You're planning on doing all the work right? That will make a big difference.

I understand your frustration but this is a project for kids to learn the process. I am buying all the parts myself, and $5000 is what I have now. The car is going in to their school in September and will probably be in there until Spring.

After the car is redone, it will only be used for the occasional weekend drive or to shows to get more projects for the school. Up until now, it has been working on old early 90's cars and 60's muscle cars.

And I know I can buy most of the stuff for $5000 and if I need to put a little more, I am fine with that.
