What play is bad in a turbo?

I am running the stock T25 on my 2G.
I have recently pulled the intake to check for shaft play.
There is no up and down, but theres about 1/4" or so in and out play.
What does this mean and how bad is it?

Thanks

Thats a lot of play. There should be no in and out play, only minimal side to side (like a 1/16th or less). I wouldnt run that turbo if it were my car. If it shits the bed while your driving it could be fatal to your motor.

For what it would cost you to rebuild the T25, you could have a 14B. Hands down a better turbo in every way and still stock... sort of.

I found a rebuild kit from G Pop Shop for $79+ shp.
Is the 14b an upgrade that the stock fuel system can handle?

Up to about 15-17 psi the stock fuel system will be adequate. Make sure you have some sort of datalogging device before you start pushing the car. I strongly recommend reading the many tech articles and upgrade path threads that are on this site so you have a clear understanding of what you are getting in to.

Where would I find the install kit to fit this?
It may not be quite a 1/4" play on my compressor wheel.
For what its worth, could I go for the rebuild and see if that cures it?

Turbo has 93k miles on it and doesn't burn any oil or smoke

Quite a few vendors carry the install kit. Look in the supporting vendors section for that.

A rebuild kit would fix your problem but what others are getting at is that for a bit more money you would have a more capable and better quality turbo that would not necessarily require any supporting mods assuming you keep it at a safe boost level ( 14-16psi)

The T25 isn't as well built as the 14b (just like the 2g BOV being surpassed by the 1g BOV). They made a lot of things tougher back then. Honestly the 14b will enable you to go bigger after (so you'll change less things down the road) and if you ever buy a 16g/18g/20g later, the install kit will already be installed. It's more durable and easier to fix (if you ever need to rebuild it). Heck a rebuild kit for a 14b is around 50$ for instance.

Take this route for the install kit:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/turbo-system-tech/244362-homemade-install-kit-14b.html#post151049332

for the install kit, it doesn't take much to get the parts needed for it and it can be done on the cheap. Sure you can buy it all done for you but that comes at a price most don't agree with. I'd even suggest asking whoever you buy the 14b from to get you the parts needed to install it on your 2g. In most cases we all have parts stored somewhere that could make up the kit.

If you have 1/4" of in/out play, the turbo's junk. You have no turbine sealing ring left, and both wheels have rubbed the housing to the point where the turbo will never be efficient even if it were rebuilt.

Scrap it and move on. ;)

Both would work. The 14b is super cheap to find but requires a few things needed to be installed (still cheap to find). The T28 is a direct replacement for a 2g turbo car but is very pricey. There are a couple of different versions of a T28 and is compareable to a 16g varient turbo.

Choice is yours.

Exactly what he said a 1/4" is a mile in terms of shaft play.

Now would be a good time to swap over to an MHI framed turbo seeing has how quality parts for the small frame garret units are getting harder to come by.

Yes you can run a 16g with stock fuel system and SMIC.

Do you have 3inch exhaust on your car? Only thing I worry about is boost creep. I had that problem with my old 14b untill I ported the crap out of it.

You can piece together your own install kit for much cheaper then other kits. I bought the extremepsi kit when I first got my car. But you can piece yours together for cheaper

I currently have the stock exhaust on the car. I have my mind set on a 14b for now, as it is my daily driver and a little cheaper. Im aware I will need the install kit to fit it up to the car.
Will I get the boost creep if I limit to 14psi?

Also, Would a manifold be a wise upgrade while I am in that deep?
Even though I have the stock exhaust system for now?

Your stock exhaust manifold is fine..I might suggest porting it to help boost creep.

But all around great turbo, and great upgrade from the t25..

You will want down the road to upgrade the exhaust everybody does it..Nothing new there.

Awesome, I have done porting of ATV intake and exhaust manifolds so I will give it a try.

Would a FMIC be a good upgrade with the 14b?
I know the T25 is small for the FMIC, but will the 14b become heat soaked if ran with the SMIC?
I could always just not run it as hard too LOL

For a daily driver not being pushed higher than stokish boost, the smic will do fine. You can even push it hard just as long as it's not continuous. If you're looking for bigger down the road though, can't hurt to get a FMIC or you can also just get a supra SMIC and keep the stock look while being able to handle more cooling for the added boost.
