I recently found a used 14b, but it has some in/out play. I'm about to put this turbo on a car, as repair kits will take a long time till they ship. However, I'm wondering if it's a good idea.

I searched and found that in/out play should be pretty much absent, and if it's too bad, I should see oil burn, and the turbo might fail, sending chunks of metal throughout the engine.

How bad in/out play is acceptable in general? Can you correlate in/out play with time till turbo goes bad?

I would like this turbo to last 3 months, because after that I'll go with 16G. So rebuilding this one seems extra expenses.

At what stage free-play is considered too bad to risk it?

If it is pretty slight it will last if you DONT beat on it. I've run a turbo with both play slight and only seen oil burn. Put 10k on it

Depends whether the play is from wear or if something is blocking the oiling hole. If the hole is blocked, it could be junk by next week. If it's just wear, you may be able to make it 3 months.

Concerning the acceptable amount of play:

If you can feel it, you probably already have wheel damage.
