I have done a bit of research and I can't find much information on rebuilding this block I have a possibility of acquiring.

The #1 piston appears to be warped, I do not know from what. I haven't completely gone over it but I don't see any rust or cracks. What would you do if you had this 6 bolt block from a turbo car?

k... 1st off please dont make the mistake some of us have had ..... CHECK THE BLOCK AND MAKE SURE IT SAYS 4G63. it will be stamped right behind the oil dip stick about half way down....

next thing is decode the vin just to double check it is a turbo 6 bolt.. this wil also tell u what way to go...

the reason i say this is ### my fellow dsmer, friend got a block right out of a clean 90 talon awd at a junk yard and it was a g4cp block.. aka hundi block.. aka. paper weight...

btw the vin number is right on the tranny side of the number 4th cyl at the top of the block, probably covered in rust..:aha:

let us know:hellyeah:

Decoding VINs

sorry forgot this.... it the vin decoding numbers

It is the stock motor from a friends 91 laser rs turbo fwd. I will double check to make sure it is the 4G63 block. Once it is confirmed, do you think it is rebuildable? How would I check?

That kind of depends on your definition of rebuildable. If you are looking to do a very basic build and not have the block bored oversize and decked and align bored and all of that, then your pool of acceptable blocks is quite small. You will have to do a lot of measuring on the block you are looking at to determine if it is within spec. Otherwise, if you are willing to give a block everything it needs, about the only thing that makes it unsuitable is cracking or really deep gashes. Strip it down and take it to a machinist. The machinist should be able to check it for cracks and then do any other necessary work if it passes inspection.

If it was me and I didn't really know anything about engine's, I would find a good reputable machine shop and take it to them. You can easily tell if it is a 4g63 block if it has oil squirters. Non turbo's won't have them but they are still fine block's to use. Even a G4CP block would work as long as you were building the internals. A block is a block, they didn't make one less than another until you get into open deck and having to sleeve which our cars don't have. You really can't warp a piston so my recommendation is to take it too a professional. Too many complicated and very important measurements need to be taken/factored into a rebuild that 90% of the do it yourselfers don't have. Plastigage the bearings, torque some bolts and set the ring gap isn't all there is too it.

I was planning on bringing it in to get it looked at, but I don't want to go through the trouble of driving 50 miles to go pull it out and then finding out its worthless. He showed me the #1 piston is out of round but I still haven't been told from what. I would like to build the motor to something that can hold 550ish horsepower which is very much achievable from what I have been reading. I wouldn't mind boring it over if I had to either.

Easy. Since he showed you the piston. He can easily show you the 4g63 stamp on it. He can also can easily show you the front of the block to verify that it is a 6 bolt. Click! The 6bolt can handle 500whp daily.

After that, you have to go see. If there's no hole in the block or scores on the cylinder wall then you are good. If he'd show you holes and/or scores, he wouldn't be selling the block. So that is something you MUST see for yourself.

Cranks can be recut, rod big ends can be rehoned. . . Those things are rebuildable.

Nice. Yeah I will probably just go out there and take a look at it. I'm getting the block with everything for $10 since i'm selling everything else on the car for him. :) Thanks guys

The comment of cylinder #1 being out of round worries me. But $10 for the complete engine is a steal. Best case: You have a decent block that you can work with. Worst case: A very large paperweight. Good luck.

nah I haven't gotten it yet but I did talk to him about it It is the stock block, and it overheated and he said the #1 piston warped from that. He said the block is probably rebuildable. I should have it in about 2 weeks because the car is about 40 miles away and I have work and school until my finals are done in two weeks.
