What kind of oil should i use.

I have a 1995 eagle talon tsi awd, small 16g turbo. what kind of oil do you reccomend i use. I heard the best brands really are not that great. what kind do you use on your 4g63t

Mobil 1 10w-30 synthetic. It all depends on what you want to run. The only reason i run synthetic in everything i own is because the oil does not break down as fast as conventional oils.

my dad's friend used royal purple and always kept up on his car. not even a 100k miles the engine blew

Hey what do you think of 5w-30 in your area? Why or why not, as I am in Boston and looking to upgrade to synthetic and have a 2G eclipse GSX w/16G, intake, exhaust, and my motor makes a ton of heat (FMIC blocks radiator, but I have mishimoto fans added to help.)

I'm in his area, and it's friggin' hot here! It's been like 86-90 degrees almost every day, so I wouldn't run 5W30 in my engine. Maybe in the winter, but I would never drive my car in the winter anyhow. I run Valvoline Synpower 10W30 with a K&N filter every time.

(oh-oh .. another "dig the dead dog up and kick it around some more" thread on oils..)

There are tonnage of threads on this subject with really no definite answer outside of actual, written test figures performed by professional labs.

Also, since one believes in one product to work for them for their motor application, yet that very same product may raise havoc in someone elses motor application - why a definite answer cannot be given.

Thus, 2 suggestions below since I've dealt with both in separate vehicles and they have proven to work for my usage:

AMSOIL, or Mobil-1 10w30 ... oils that have proven themselves in a huge variety of applications and have proven themselves to be the most compatible oils for almost every motor that is out there.

RP is way too much in price and doesn't have the wear factor as high as these two mentioned.

RP=paying for the name and not the quality.

summer in my engines i run mobile or redline 10-40 or winter 10-30.

+1 I agree AMSOIL, or Mobil-1 10w30 are badass, and recommend them.

Royal Purple 10w-30, Redline 20w-50, or the Castrol 10w-60 from the BMW stealership. I will never run Mobil 1 in anything I own. I worked at a shop that had @ 9 race cars under us and motors were getting torn down and rebuilt all the time. All the guys running Mobil 1 always got premature scoaring on the cam journals and sometimes the mains. The engines ran hotter and made less power. When they switched over to Redline 20w50 there was less wear, they ran cooler temps, and made a tad bit more power on the dyno.
I swear by Royal Purple for all of my vehicles, I really like the other 2 as well though especially in the hotter months.

+1 for Amsoil 10W30. Although I run either one in my vehicle I have some issues with the mobil one breaking down.

For the simpler questions you have about your car, the ones you think MAY have been asked and answered in DSM's 20 year history... please please use the Search function. It really does work... when people spell things properly.

So your dad's friend's car blew at 100k AND he used Royal Purple for the oil. By that logic, my grandfather drank water everyday and died when he was 87. So.... water must kill people, right?
