2G What is this noise? Balance shaft belt snapped or what?

Well my DSM let's me down again. A month or so ago, my car jumped timing somehow. No teeth were stripped, the belt was nice and tense, the auto tensioner was still good, the pulleys were good also, the balance shaft belt was still intact, but it jumped. I figured it'd be cheaper to get another head instead of going through all the junk to buy valves and get the guides checked. I bought a head off my friend for $100 with NO bent valves.

I put everything back together, timed the engine, and made sure everything was perfect. I fired her up and immediately got this noise. It won't go away permanently. Only if I hold it around 2,000rpm or so will it start to fade (The taps will be less frequent and sometimes won't tap). As soon as it goes back to idle, a few seconds later the tapping resumes. I've taken off the valve cover to see if anything was left in there, it was clean. The engine idles perfectly good.

Here's a video on YouTube of the noise, I'd appreciate any comments and help. I'm 18 years old and bought my first Turbo talon because of my love for DSMs. I've put so much blood and sweat into this thing, I literally let a tear out when I heard that knock. It doesn't sound like it's bottom end but top end. Nevermind the weird idle, we had a vacuum leak at that moment so it was idling weird. Also, don't mind the smoke near the exhaust, I had sprayed Carb cleaner on it before and it was just burning away.

I would change the lifters out from your old head. Or buy some new lifters.

I would put new lifters in. How did the head look like when you got it from you friend? Was is bagged/sealed? I would just put in revised lifters and be done with it.

So that is definitely a lifter then? And no, he pulled it from a spare engine he had, which I saw running a while ago. The head seemed good and the valves didn't leak. (Poured water into the runners).

i can see how it could sound like a lifter, but a bad rod bearing sounds exactly the same too. I recently had a buddy get the same engine noise and I would have bet money it was a lifter. Noise came from the head and everything. It ended up being a rod bearing. How is your oil pressure?

I just cant see a lifter making any less noise at a certain rpm, but I have seen rod knock settle down at a certain RPM before.

Ill look at them also. Thing is, before the timing jumped, the bottom end was perfectly good. So we'll see. But im currently running the stock gauge (Yeah bad idea but I haven't gotten a chance to hook up the new one) At idle, oil pressure is right at the line give or take. Maybe 1mm below. Thanks to everyone for the tips so far. Anything else to look out for?

Does the noise vary with the clutch pedal pushed in?

i dont want to create a new thred about the issue i have but i think my issue is the same as his. my knock isent that loud. when i rev the car it speeds up and you can still here it. i have a 6 sec video, taken from my phone so it isent the best. if you need a longer vid or a better quality one ill make another one.

To the OP, I remember this happening to me after a head gasket job in my first DSM 8 years ago. It tapped just like that, maybe not AS violent, but it had a terrible tapping noise from the head. I poured in marvel mystery oil into my engine and drove it it cleared right up and ran perfect.

Well I've been so damn busy with school that I haven't gotten a chance to check anything. Now i've heard some people here say rod knock, so I think my first step should be to pull the oil pan and check for metal shavings. Because if there are no metal shavings, then I'll feel more relieved. I don't want to take off the timing belt right away and lift the cams if it ends up being rods, it'd be a waste of time since i'd just pull the whole engine. I want to take your advice BrokenTsi, but i'm honestly scared to shit of driving it and it ####s up.

That's not rod knock. Sounds to me like you left somthing or dropped somthing in one of the cylinders when the head was off. When you rev it up the noise changes and flutters abit depending on where the piece is or how it happend to get "squished" that particular time. I would pull all your plugs and look down into the cylinders with a scope, (you should see some shiney spots on the piston) if this is the case.

I've seen this at my shop a few times and pulled many heads to remove peoples fu&k ups. In one case i even found a wing nut off the air cleaner smashing around a cylinder but being to big to pass the exhaust valve.

That's just my 2 cents worth, since i'm certain it's not rod knock and doesn't sound like a lifter.
