Ok. I bought a motor used off of a guy and replaced the balance shaft and timing belt. the first time I started it up it made a noise like a lifter or valve or something. I replaced the lifters and it still made the noise. So, I did a compression test and it has good compression all across the board. I took the timing cover off to find the balance shaft belt was broke. I pulled the old belt out and started it up to see if it still made the noise and it did. Took off timing belt and when I turn the oil pump pull back and forth it kind of makes a noise, but only when I slightly move it back and forth. The noise got louder until around 3,500 rpm and the got real quiet. Please help. Also, how do I know if my oil pump is bad? and I'm thinking i'll just remove the balance shafts while i have it torn down this far. Any and all help is appreciated. thanks alot.

You may have spun the oil pump balance shaft bearing out. Pull the oil pan and give it a look. You will need to pull the pan to pull the oil pump anyway.

Just want to make sure... will main bearings make noise? I didn't think they would... Should I change the main and rod bearings while I'm in there or not? I have no idea how many miles is on this engine...

If it was rod bearings it would do it all the time, or at least it did on my 2G 7 bolt and the 6 bolt I put in it.

I know rod bearings get louder when you rev it up. But I asked about mains.
