2G What is this noise? Balance shaft belt snapped or what?

If it had metal run through the bearings I would take it down and look it all over. You may even get away with just blowing the galleys out with cleaner and reassembling it but a good bet you have metal imbedded in the bearings and some scoring on the journals. Sorry for your luck. Post up some pics when you get into it.

If there was metal in the oil then yes in sure you have some damage. The oil filter will catch debris coming from the oil pump.
