What is this? (Early 2G-T intake "tank") box, licp

I had one of those stupid silencer things on my 1g Protege, except it's huge, like 2 feet long. I once read in the Protegeclub forums that a Miata dynoed 6 LESS horsepower from removing the silencer
I find that extremely hard to swallow. You're better off without it. Intakes don't like restrictions and turbulence.

I can't say I felt any improvement, but Im sure there is with now not having that thing in there. Plus for me, it was free since I had the peice of pipe, and only took maybe 15 mins from start to finish including jacking up the car. Actually took longer to take those two pics then it did to do the mod ROFL

I'm suspicious of any two dynamometer tests that aren't at least 5% different. Under that, and I call random variables.

the peice i cut was actually a little too long, I had to shorten it after I took that picture. also, you will notice the plastic peice is curved and mine is straight, it worked fine that way.

let me know if you want to know anything else about it

finished picture -

How long is that metal pipe?

:talon:

I'm not sure how long the pipe is supposed to be, but when you take of the silencer just compare it with the pipe, mark it off, and hack saw that sum bi***.

hey guys took off my Intercooler today and found this crap next to my Intercooler,it had a connecter pipe to the SMIC,i asked around but no one knows what it is,so i post this to see if any of you out there know what it might be

I hope this post was moved to this thread, and was not actually posted in this thread today. Being this entire thread is about that part...

Does anybody know what that bottle thing right after the hose coming from the turbo is? I looked at the inside of it and it just looks like it would restrict air. Maybe it's a sound reducer?(which is stupid) I'm thinking of just replacing it with a piece of pvc pipe, does anybody know if a piece of the gray pvc pipe would be strong enough to hold pressure?

you are right, it is a silencer and not all cars came from the factory with them. You could replace it with a piece of pipe but I would recommend using a piece of exhaust tubing, although pvc pipe would probably be fine if you use good clamps (t-bolt clamps).

Nevermind, I just took it out and replaced it. Just for future reference, the pipe dimensions are 2 1/4 dia. x 4 3/4 long.

well sense i just saw this topic i may as well add my .02 ... i went to replace mine back when i got the car and was checking it out and saw the resonator and was used to taking these out on my other cars so i went to it. i took out the box and had a 2 1/4" pipe went to put it up and... it didnt fit!! i tried shuving it in the IC piping for like 10 min then gave up. i measured the resonator box inlet and outlet at 2" in diameter. i look on here and everyone says its 2 1/4" wtf is wrong with mine? although i have a bunch of wierd stuff going on with my car i beat a TSI AWD with a 16G and Big front mount running he says 16psi :wtf: he asked me what i had and couldnt believe that im on the T-25 and just basic mods MBC gutted cat, 2 1/2" catback intake, and BOV. anyway thats another story all together...btw hes got a timeslip at 14.4!?!?

mine was like that too, I had to grease the crap out of the piece of exhaust pipe and use a small flathead screwdriver to spread the stock pieces over it.

Uhh...yeah, I'm hoping this is two threads that've been merged..which in that case, mods might want to clean it up & remove the 12 other replies asking what the 'box next to the intercooler' is.

I've got a 95 GSX that has that little black box installed on the outlet of the T25. I just put in a 14b, which is great! But, I've been blowing my licp off right at the ic inlet. I had this same problem with the T25 when I replaced it with a not so great piece of pvc. Yes, stupid me, I've learned. But know when I'm doing it with 2" aluminum, I've been thinking some more. I work for a water district in California and on water distribution pump stations, we have "shock traps". These tanks are fairly large, about 6ft dia spheres, are on the pump outlets (common for all pumps) and are designed, obviously, to absorb water shock, water hammer, ect. Is it possible that this little black box is designed to absorb air surges, backpressure, ect? I was just wondering based on my problems with my ic piping. What do you dsmers think?

No, the box was added for the 95 and some of the 96 model year. It was put on because they thought that consumers wouldnt want a car that spool so loud (ROFL ). They later figured out that it was pointless and soon went back to all rubber IC piping. The reason your PVC came off is because it wasn't beaded on the outside, like you will notice that your intercooler is and so are other hard IC piping. That beading, being slightly larger in diameter, keeps the rubber connectors (or, in this case, rubber IC piping) from sliding off under boost by forcing it to go over the bead.

So I was recently tightening up all hardware on my turbo components when I noticed a small airbox looking object right before the stock SMIC. I cant figure out the purpose of it and assume its only for noise reduction, but then thought it could be a charge box for extra air from the intake. Anyways if anyone has removed this or knows the benefits or drawbacks to this airbox please let me know.:dsm:

If you are talking about the sqaure-ish looking piece directly in front of the SMIC leave it there. It's basically there to route the air going to it directly to the SMIC instead of around it.

Okay, im not quite sure I understand what you mean by saying it routes it to the SMIC because the air cant go anywhere else other than into the intercooler. Lots of aftermarket piping kits eliminate that airbox so I dont see it affecting performance. Not trying to say your wrong, I just cant find any information on that piece anywhere, and I just want to know the purpose.

He's talking about the silencer. Removing it is one of the free mods.

Is this attached to the actual piping, or is it the plastic that leads from the hole in the bumper to the location of the intercooler?

If you notice, the box is tapered just slightly to route the air from that hole just to the side and through your intercooler. Some after market installations eliminate this box because the upgraded IC already allows much more cooling and may even be too large to fit the routing plastic without modification.

If you're talking about a completely enclosed box that is attached to the piping for your intercooler, then I have no idea.

+1. It's not an air box, it's an air duct :D
