I found a 1996 Spyder GST for $4900. It is a 5-speed, 91,000 miles on it, white with black top, 17 inch rims. There is 80% tread left on the tires but the guy has a brand new never used set of tires for the car that is included in the price. He says the top doesn't leak, but it had a rip and was repaired, but he didn't like it, so he bought a brand new oem top that isn't installed and is included with the car. He says the interior is really nice, everything inside works, but you have to help the top up a little bit. He doesn't know if the timing belt has been replaced or not. It has a 3 inch cat back exhaust, 16G turbo, apexi intake and a greddy bov. He says it runs great and has no issues. He says he just wants to get rid of it because he doesn't drive it and its taking up space in his garage, which sounds good to me because he kept it garaged at least. he also said that the paint is good on it, no clear coat coming off, no body damage or dents. I'm going to check for crankwalk be looking at the clutch pedal when I turn left. I have been talking to the guy over the phone and I'm suppose to go drive for 4 hours to go and buy it if it checks out on Thursday. Does it sound good? Should I ask him or check for other things on it?

I found a 1998 eclipse GST for sale at $4500 but have a couple of questions. But first Ill list what I know and have been told.. Its a rebuilt motor with only 190 miles on it and still in breakin stage but the owner realised the turbo (T3T4) is bad either needs rebuild or replaced. So now he's selling. Here are some more information
Bored with built internalss
Balance shaft delete
Full exhaust
New balanced flywheele & clutch
CP forged pistons
Eagle H Beam rods with stock crank
All metal boost tubes
Megan racing headers
T3T4 Turbo with greedy BOV with tial wastegate

The guy said it runs and he will test drive and said it can't be taken past 2000rpm because of the breakin which is understandable, but could that be an excuse to hide serious motor noise and higher rpms? What can i do to make sure the motor is good without blowing the motor assuming it really is in breakin still? And how much hp do those mods create? Worth it?

Absolutely not LOL. By the sounds of it, id avoid that car like the plague. Sounds like a blown ebay turbo, with most likely a knock off bov and wg.

Besides the blow turbo, that price is extremely high. A really clean gsx could pull 4500, but not a ragged out gst. Is there a CL add you could link?

Eclipse gst

What do you guys think? I personally wouldn't offer him more than a grand. He claims its firm but this post has been up for a while (repost) and I'm sure he's ready to get rid of it. The transmission in my Spyder GS went into limp mode and my teenage mind thought it best to just get rid of it and now I'm stuck without a car. I'd switch the tranny to manual on this car anyways, I just need something to get me around and eventually start building. What would be a good offer for whats wrong?

That does look decent, but with a blown turbo, you can knock $1500 off that price right now... Then your ballpark. I will betcha the guy who owns it doesn't want it revved because it is solid mounted or something and the car vibrates. Most people don't understand that isn't a bad thing in cars like this. If the motor was built right, revving it past 2k isn't going to hurt it.

$500 and a case of beer.... Seriously. It is REBUILT. The title is REBUILT. That means that car is a reconstructed wreck, and if you didn't do the work yourself, you have absolutely no idea what you are getting into. It could be a rolling death trap for all we know...

Wouldn't the car have to be inspected for safety to get the rebuilt title? Is it something I should even mess with to get a steal or just walk away completely?

Or drive it until I could get a roller and swap the engine and tranny into the roller?

It does have to be inspected, but mainly for VIN numbers and obvious major defects. It isn't inspected very closely. Because of the title, it isn't worth much at all. A Rebuilt title is only a tiny bit better than a Salvage title. If you buy it, consider it a parts car. You won't get your money back out of it unless you part it out. It definitely isn't worth what that guy is asking. Not even close.

Would buying it and not beating the piss out of it until I got a hatchback roller to swap the motor in be practical? Is a rebuilt title harder/more expensive to insure? And if I did go that route, I would part out the rest of the car.

I'm not sure most insurance companies would even insure it. If they did, you are under 25, driving a turbocharged "sports coupe" with a rebuilt title... If I were an insurance agent and saw that combination, I wouldn't insure it. That sounds like a stereotypical recipe for big liability claims from multiple potential wrecks, and they'd likely never recoup the losses from your monthly premium. That's probably how they'll see it.

I'd just look over it. I backed into my girls car and dented the door and rear quarter panel. That alone almost totaled it. She took as much as she could without totaling it. 1926$ for dents it would have had a salvage title to get more money.

Try and figure out why the title is like that and check it over good. Hell a hail damage claim could total the car.

My dad knows this lady who does all of our insurance stuff to get cheaper policies. I'll have him talk to her and confirm whether or not it could be insured.

The guy is wanting 7500 for it. Black very nicely kept inside too with black rim. Beautiful car what do you guys think?

Alright, so I thought I just broke the timing belt on my 93 eagle Talon ES, so I planned on redoing the head. Well, I got the head off and one of the pistons has a huge hole in it, so who knows what's messed up inside. I don't really have the time or money to rebuild the whole motor. The car is a 5 speed with less than 1000 miles on a rebuilt Trans and new clutch. It also has new tires with about 100 miles. It's in pretty good shape body and interior wise, just a few imperfections. How much is it worth complete minus motor?

Although you may have a sentimental attachment to the car it has a very low monetary value.

A n/t with a blown motor that has everything else working would be worth around $250.00 - $325.00 in my area.

I found a 97 GSX for sale next to me... it drives awesome. I can't remember everything that was done to it, but here's the main points that I remember. It has pretty much everything that I'm going to do done already.

EvoIII 16g
FP manifold
I *think* VRSF FMIC?
Apexi SAFC
I dont think it was built in any way and sorry I don't remember fuel specifics.
Dyno sheet was recent-ish and had like 320-something HP

NEAT:
Seibon OEM CF hood (looked brand new + no gaps)
Evo IX SSL seats (super nice)
Work Emotion CR Kai 17" w/ Pirelli P Zero Nero tires (this was sick!)

I know the "build" is pretty standard but everything looked well done and the NEAT notes above were icing on the cake.

He's asking 8k for it... thoughts? Sorry no pics but it was super clean with no rust in the common areas

oh and like 140k-ish miles

Not sure- typically a stock GSX thats well kept with low miles will bring a decent amount($3500-$5000) but if the parts are new and they are installed properly (the biggest of concerns sense you want to buy it) then paying a little more may not be out of the question-

The biggest points I would be concerned with if it were me would be:
1. Service records if any
2. If not when was the last timing belt done, how long has the car been modified
3. Was it purchased modified (when was the last time you saw a 1 owner GSX?)
4. What clutch is in it- When was it replaced?
5. Whats the transmission condition like? when was it serviced?
6. Compression check-

Basically you need to be the detective and find out what can cost you the most money to repair if it fails and then determine if the failure liability is high or low- Determine your risk tolerance and then advance from there. Don't let the cars apparent condition hide the possibility of a problem that can side line your car and your wallet in just a matter of moments after the money changes hands. Once that happens, its your baby-

Will-

This thread blows my mind. All the money put into these cars.. and if its done right is worth like 2k bucks. My car is mint and I'm asking 8k and I feel I'm giving it away. I'd laugh at someone who offered me 5k.
