Maybe some people. Actually it's still useful for 1g people if you don't have ECMLink or standalone. MMCd is still available and palm got very cheaper nowadays.

The metal end definitely hooks up to a monitor of some sort if not directly to a laptop to display a screen. Looks very similar to the plug you use for hooking up your computer to a monitor. Just with some weird special plug at the other end.
