okay newb question, how do i drain and change the trannie oil? same way as an oil change i would assume. Jack the car up take off a cap let it drain, cap back on, pour in new trannie fluid?

If ya dont have a chiltons/haynes buy one, if you do have one read it.

I had my car jacked up to get to the bolt next to the wheel, but as soon as it starts drainging I let it down. I fill it with the car down. I use BG also.

That would work - the trick is to ENSURE that the car is LEVEL when filling so as to get an ACCURATE fluid level reading from the FRONT Plug. BTW I found it easier to Fill thru the Shifter Detente' Plug.

Related to this subject if guys would just bite the bullet & change the Clutch Master Cylinder & Slave Cylinder when needed they wouldn't be tearing up their Synchros & Trannys with bad shifts to begin with.

does anyone have a pic of the filler cap? i have a chiltons and i can't really tell what they are pointing to... it's a black and white blurry photo

2G comments only...

I have tried various combinations of Redline oils, BG synchroshift, and both my cars and my better half's HATE them. I have not switched Katy's 95 to GM Synchromesh yet, but all the transmissions I have had in my 95 and 98 have performed best on GMS with no exceptions. I have no doubt that when I drain the BG out of Katy's trans and refill with GMS it will make her happy - of course if it doesn't I'm a dead man............

I have heard that BG Synchroshift II is much better in 2G transmissions, but frankly I don't want to check this out - GMS is working fine thankyouverymuch.

One caveat, it seems that GMS is all done after 20k - I change mine at the 15K service schedule.

Almost- except on transmissions and the like, you take off the FILL plug FIRST.

It's a real pain in the ass to have a nice, drained gearbox..... and a completely seized filler plug.

First of all let me say transmissions are expensive, $45 in fluid for bg 2 is not a lot of money when you consider the protection you get.

Also no one has said anything about NEO. Neo is what the subie rally team uses and seems to be a great product. It is very expensive in fluid terms around $75 a gallon but it has been tested.

justa thought.

I'm with ACM: I'll never use light syn's again in my 2g tranny (100k miles). I've used Redline and Mobil religiously since I bought the car new (Redline winters and Mobil summers) and hated the noise and crunch of the Redline and the can't-get-a-gear of the Mobil.

So, in frustration I tried Valvoline 80-140 GL-5 semi-syn and love it. Valvoline tech claims by email that the sulphur issue is deactivated and non-existent and the synchros are fine but all I know is it shifts like crazy, I don't hear gears chattering like I ALWAYS did with the Redline, and gear over-run wail is all but gone.

Maybe it's the high milage but this heavy weight works and I still get good, quiet shifts every time. Go figure.

Yes I have tried this stuff along with a lot of different gear oils (BG II, Syncromesh, Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil, etc.) and it was definately the best of the bunch by a long shot. The downside to this though is that it is a lot thicker. Now correct me if I'm wrong but the thicker stuff will cause more friction thus more wear.

If that's not the case consider me going to get some of this stuff tomorrow.

changed my fluid in tranny regular 85-90 gear oil in it i think that was a no no fills hard and stiff does not grind will not slid into gear . i went to the speed shop and purchase royal purple syncromax as any body used that

have heard comments on everything but the royal purple stuff.

so as the original starter post asked, is this stuff comparable, has anybody used it, and what are their comments on it.

thanks

ok so far no one has come out and said what is the best tranny fluid to use. one that does not cause too much friction, and one that does not cause the brass to wear out. it seems like each fluid is either too thick , or has an additive that wears out brass. i want a fluid that does neither, and i dont want to mix any two kinds either to get both benefits. should I just use factory stock fluid?

that valvoline fluid seemed good at first, but then someone said that it is too thick. is this true?

any word on the ROYAL PURPLE FLUID yet?

Spend the $15 to try it. If you don't like the stuff, then go on to the high-dollar lubes..... and see if there's any difference.

Sorry to bring this old post up, but I AM IN SEARCH OF A MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID THAT MY FWD TRANNY WILL LIKE!

I recently did my clutch, and when I put everything back together, I spent 11 bux a quart on this ROYAL PURPLE 75W90 "MAX GEAR OIL" and filled my transmission up hoping to get nice results.

Well, before my clutch job, all gears went in VERY SMOOTHLY and Never grinded... BUT NOW, I could barely even get 4th GEAR TO GET IN! 1, 2, 3 and 5 are all good, but 4th sux!!

So, In my oppinion, Royal purple "Max Gear" synthetic 75w90 is not so good.

I'm still researching on dsmtuners to see what oil to really get. I want my 4th gear back!! LOL shoot, it even got so bad that when I downed 3rd and quickly shifted into 4th, my shifter got stuck in fourth ALL THE WAY HOME, off the freeway and onto sidestreets, etc.!

I thought I blew my tranny, but I just turned my car off when I got home and was able to shove my shifter out of gear... Now, I really gotta rev match to down shift or up shift to fourth....

thanks!

Mark

i doubt its the royal purple thats caused it, ive ran it for about 3k so far and it actually helped mine. Couldnt get it into reverse without hitting another gear first but now I can, but im ordering a stage 2 tre tranny next week and ill ###### go with the penzoil.

what do you guys think of royal purple gear oil in my 90 awd tranny? it says max-gear sae 75w-90 on it. what do you guys think? also how much fluid am i supposed to put in?
