Almost- except on transmissions and the like, you take off the FILL plug FIRST.TuRBo'DTWiX said:okay newb question, how do i drain and change the trannie oil? same way as an oil change i would assume. Jack the car up take off a cap let it drain, cap back on, pour in new trannie fluid?

Yes I have tried this stuff along with a lot of different gear oils (BG II, Syncromesh, Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil, etc.) and it was definately the best of the bunch by a long shot. The downside to this though is that it is a lot thicker. Now correct me if I'm wrong but the thicker stuff will cause more friction thus more wear.Jon Lane said:I'm with ACM: I'll never use light syn's again in my 2g tranny (100k miles). I've used Redline and Mobil religiously since I bought the car new (Redline winters and Mobil summers) and hated the noise and crunch of the Redline and the can't-get-a-gear of the Mobil.
So, in frustration I tried Valvoline 80-140 GL-5 semi-syn and love it. Valvoline tech claims by email that the sulphur issue is deactivated and non-existent and the synchros are fine but all I know is it shifts like crazy, I don't hear gears chattering like I ALWAYS did with the Redline, and gear over-run wail is all but gone.
Maybe it's the high milage but this heavy weight works and I still get good, quiet shifts every time. Go figure.

shoot, it even got so bad that when I downed 3rd and quickly shifted into 4th, my shifter got stuck in fourth ALL THE WAY HOME, off the freeway and onto sidestreets, etc.!ok so far no one has come out and said what is the best tranny fluid to use. one that does not cause too much friction, and one that does not cause the brass to wear out. it seems like each fluid is either too thick , or has an additive that wears out brass. i want a fluid that does neither, and i dont want to mix any two kinds either to get both benefits. should I just use factory stock fluid?
that valvoline fluid seemed good at first, but then someone said that it is too thick. is this true?
any word on the ROYAL PURPLE FLUID yet?
