What does this sound like

I took a video of the sound my talon is making. What do you guys think this could be rod knock or ticking lifter?

sounds like rod knock but videos are horrible on sound so if i were you i would ask someone to come check it out for you or take it to your friendly nearby dsm shop

A good rule of thumb is, if it goes away when you give her a little gas, it's a lifter, if it does it always, rod knock

Definately cant afford a 6 bolt swap right now, the thing that also wierd is that the motor was rebuilt about 15k miles ago. Tomarrow I'm going to take it to a dsm shop to have them check it out.

I had a lifter that sounded similar to that...then the day I replaced the lifter I spun a bearing so I think mine was a combination of both.

But I agree with lofty, if it doesn't go away during gas/acceleration then I'd bet its rod knock.

yeah, that definitely sounds like rod knock to me... sounds exactly like the last dsm i picked up(rod knock) with a big hole in the block now

Rod Knock. You spun a rod bearing.

Now the crank/rod/bearing/ are all shot. Stop running it ASAP so you dont ruin the bearings in the turbo and head with all the shavings in your oil right now.

Take off 1 spark plug wire at a time and listen to see if the noise goes away if it does then there is something wrong with that cylinder. Have you done a compression check? Leak down test? Pull your intercooler pipes off and see if there is a lot of oil in them?

My friends 240 sounded just like that, and when he went down the road in it, it got louder and louder and faster. Kinda sounded like a wood pecker. It ended up to be a spun rod bearing.

I have bad lifter tick in my 2g and it goes away when u give it some gas or the car warms up nice.

Rod knock and you need to replace the engine

Jack it up and take the pan off and take a look before you end up with souveniors for everyone. It will cost alot less to fix now than after it gets worse or chunks out the side of your block. I hope it's just a bad lifter but doesn't sound like it . good luck

Isn't that too high of a pitch for it to be rod knock. When I changed the oil there wasn't any metallic speckles or shavings in the oil. I'm having it checked out, I'll keep you guys updated.

when did you change the oil, I'm sorry to tell you but that definitely isn't a lifter, either you spun a bearing or there's a bomb in your car ,

It's the sound of horribly-routed plug wires.


My diagnosis without pulling the pan would be rod knock- I've never heard lifters that loud!

Yea some else had mention something about the spark plug wires. Im gunna have it checked out today and I'll let you guys know what exactly it is.

If it was miss wired sparkplugs it probably would not stay running and would backfire and miss.

I took it to a dsm shop yesterday. It hasn't been looked at yet, but they say it may be something with valves. I'll know for sure either tomarrow or Tuesday.

i don't know if the video is deceiving me, but that sounds a little too loud for just valves, but best of luck

Honestly, if you pay enough attention at the end of the video you can hear the lifters ticking. That is for sure a rod knock, never heard of valves causing anything to sound like that...

I hope it's not rod knock, but if it does turn out to be rod knock. Do you guys think I should get the motor rebuild? The thing that sucks though is that the motor was rebuild 15k ago. People said swap in a 6 bolt, but I can't afford it right now. I'll have to look around to see if I can find one for a decent price. Do you guys know any places that sell good 6 bolts for a decent price?
