Ok I guess im sorta looking for a check list this is my frist rebuild.. my cars a 91 GSX with 109,000 Mls only thing that was wrong was idle surge and leaking valve seals so im riping it down now what im looking for i guess is a list of what I can keep and what has to be new cause im tight on money .. car is going to be a DD and want it to pass NJ inspec so im looking for i guess stock power round 200 hp .. thanks guys !!!

So if you are replace the valve seals then you will need to remove the head.

New OEM composite HG, Viton valve steam seals, 6 piece valve cover gasket kit, FULL OEM timing belt kit (water pump can be parts store). I'd also recommend ARP head studs as well but that seems to be about it.


You should get the valves and valve guides check at a machine shop and see how fatigued your valve springs are as well.


Unless the bearings need changed out, damaged rods or pistons, then you don't need to tear apart the bottom end.

I would replace the oil pump and remove the balance shafts if you are going to be in that far. Change the rear main seal while you are in there. What budget are you working with and how much work are you looking to do?

I dont understand this i post something the next day i look in the newbie sec and i cant find my thread ... then it says 2 replies and i go to look and nothing all i see is what I asked nothing under it i dont get this .. so as of now i cant see what poeple write and i have to go to my profile then find last post by my name just to find my Q does is happen to anyone else..?

Ok that was wierd when i posted that then I saw what u guys wrote ..hmm maybe its my comp.. But anyway I had the Head cleaned Surfaced 16 new valves.. so Im done with that .. im only working with like 1,200 I want to start with 0 mls on the motor ... so I need block cleaned , surface trued, torque plate honed, mains alined for ARP ..Rods done to for ARPs . and crank polished and all new bearings and rings , and gaskets thats pretty much it right oh and the BSD kit new oil pump.. front cover.. water pump.. I hope I make this with the little money i got ..thats why im trying to see what is a have to... thanks guys for your input...

Honetly, good luck with that tight of a budget but it can be done.

Water pump can be a parts store brand, Oil pump should only be true OEM, Full OEM timing kit as well. That'll be about $500-$600 right there

You'll need to talk to your machine shop to get pricing but shouldn't be more than $400.
