okay everyone, I recently decided to take apart the main timing belt, with all the marks lined up, also put the cam gear jamming tool in place. The reason was because of a slightly damaged water pump was a cheap ebay one but also noticed OEM from extremepsi is over $150 so I bought the gates one from them for $40 roughly, specified for years 90-94, also got a new 6 bolt tensioner pulley since I had one from a 7 bolt and it was really dirty/rusty, this is a 6 bolt block to clarify.

is it possible the water pumps getting in the way? I have the special tool for the tension pulley, and to make room gets in the way to tighten the center bolt, or the water pump is in the way. Unfortunatley I threw away my old pump since I did not see a reason to keep it but I think this new one may be a bit more extended then the last one I had. never had this problem doing the timing with the old pump, not sure what the problem is.

Odd, you having this issue on a 6 bolt block, for when I did my full belt/pulley and pump changeover, I didn't have any problems with doing belt timing. Bolt was easy to get to and no issues.

Unless, you got the wrong pump - pump for the 7 bolt setup. And when you gave them your year of vehicle and looked it up in the books .. since they don't know the block difference and just took the info due to the year of your vehicle.

yeah I double checked the orders and I got the 90-94 water pump, fits and bolts to the block perfectly, I just think its a little to far extended, actually not sure if the pulleys would even fit on since its so close to the body WTF

Try putting the timing belt and everything on first and set your timing and put back your timing cover. Then put the pulley on the water pump (not bolting anything down) Keep your hand on the pulley while jacking the engine back to the normal position. You should be able to wiggle the pulley but it won't fall off cause the tight clearance between the car. Line up the bolt hole and tighten all the bolts down. That the best I can explain it to you. I know it does not look like it will clear but trust me it will It's just a pain.

Are you saying the water pump can be put on after doing the main timing? if so that'd be a lifesaver..IDK though im pretty sure 2 of the bolts are behind the tensioner and the pulley I think so maybe 1-2 bolts would be missing.

follow this step while you're doing the timing. Timing Belt VFAQ

No the waterpump must go on first before you bolt the tensioner and tensioner pulley. Just don't put the pulley on the water pump.

basically bolt down the waterpump jus don't put the pulley on them until you finish timing everything.

Your eccentric pulley....is it from a 6-bolt or a 7-bolt?

The reason I ask is I recently tried using a 7-bolt eccentric pulley on my girlfriend's 1G non-turbo 6-bolt and it rubbed the pump unless I had a washer behind it. The 6-bolt pulley cleared just fine.

The difference is the 7-bolt's (MD182537) inner race and eccentric are all one piece, like this:

...while the 6-bolt's (MD129355) inner race is separate- the eccentric is pressed into the pulley, like this:

Different widths, I suppose.

Yeah well I used the 7-bolt pulley anyway and just put a thin stainless shim-washer behind it to move it out enough to clear the pump. Been like that almost a month- works fine. This was a low-budget project, and I had a good used 7-bolt pulley with low mileage and I wasn't using a new 6-bolt pulley on a car that never revs above 4K. LOL :p

I got a new 6 bolt tensioner pulley, with the 6 bolt swing arm mounted the the 2G motor mount bracket, so which pulley should I be using? thanks for the heads up, I was wondering about the differences.

As I mentioned before, I had a used 7 bolt tensioner on my 6 bolt block with no problems at all, no washers needed for spacing either. is it because of the 2G mount on the 6 bolt block?

EDIT- okay so I think I realized my problem, the special tool I'm using is totally different then the one I used the first time from jay racing, it's actually a spanner wrench from STM. There's just no room for it in the car, more room/different postions with the jay racing tool on a small breaker bar. I bought the wrench because the other tool started to bend after a while and I knew it was going to snap, so thrown away. I just put the 6 bolt and 7 bolt tension pulleys side by side and they're basically completely the same besides the center piece, which basically moves the same way. the markings/letters are actually exactly the same on both pulleys as well.
