Hey guys, My 96 n/t has been over heating and after trying many things i finally brought it into a local shop who does all my families cars, (so their honesty is not in question). Anyway they called back and said its a blown headgasket and also the timing belt and water pump need to be changed, they recomened doing it all at once to save on labor charges and gave me a quote to do it all for 1,100. Ive been doing my research, and to me that doesnt sound to bad including all three things. Im just looking for your guys opinion. Thanks! :dsm:

t-belt change usually go for around 450-550 at dealerships as far as I know. Water pump can cost 100 bucks for an OEM one.. installation shouldn't be more then 50 bucks for it??

Headgaskets can go from 70-100 bucks, labor maybe another 100-200

i would say 1100 is a little much - i'd figure 900 bucks?

head gasket labor would cost way more than a hundred or two!but it all depends on location. :talon:

it depends, if your already doing the t-belt/water pump, changing the headgasket is fairly easy.

It was kinda the oppisite that the head gasket blew and the timing belt and water pump need to be changed to so i should do it now, Plus the shop gives a 12,000 one year warranty on all their work.

Seems not ot bad to me, and you know they are honest so that's a plus. If it was me I would do it myslef, but if that is not an option for you then take it there.

What does a complete timing belt kit cost $150 - $200? So if a timing belt job is $500 at a dealership I would say the labor for the HG would be more than the belt since the HG job has the belt half way off as it is. If you use the $200 timing belt kit figure with the $100 water pump and $100 head gasket thats $400 in parts. Whats an average hourly shop rate? $65/hr? At that rate thats just under 11 hours of labor, and figure there is some tax they have to pull out of that.

$68/hour at my shop, Yea I really trust the mechanic that does it, my uncle lives 5 min away from my and its crazy how many of our cars she has work on total. They include 93 laser 98 eclipse, 96 eclipse, 02 civic, 03 rsx, 04 grand am, 03 ranger, 94,corvette, 69 chevelle, 02 blazer, 93,tracer, 91 astrovan, 00 silverrao and thats all i can think of, some of these cars have come and come and gone but regardless she has worked on all of them
