Here's my million dollar question. Im doing some research on cost to replace them on my 1996 GS and i want to make sure i get good ones. I called up Mitsubishi to get a price and holy crap the timing belt and water pump from them is $179 for the belt and $134 for the water pump OMG. But i also called up Autozone and they have them for $53.99 (timing belt) and $37.99 (water pump). Now my big question is, are the ones at Autozone just as good at those at the dealer. I really dont wanna spend $300 bucks on just parts if i can get them for 1/3 the price somewhere else. Unless there is a different place to get decent ones for a reasonable price. I do know about rockauto.com and they are roughly the same price as autozone. I have just heard about crappy belts and water pumps and dont want to be the victim of buying a sub par part. LOL. Thanks a bunch

I used autozone parts and oem ones both lasted just fine even water pumps again over since 94 i owned dsms and no probems with store bought parts, try vendors plenty of them to choose from.
To each his or her own i wouldnt worry to much but if you want oem go ahead and spend the money and dont look back.

Well oem parts are better than autozone, oreilly ect.
I personally buy all my cars needs at extremepsi.com
Check them out

Go with an OEM belt and a topline water pump. Don't cheap out on timing belt or water pumps

Go to extreme PSI the timing belt is $84 and water pump is $55

Aright cool. Just $92.00 seems a lot more tempting then over $300 for the same parts if they are both going to be just as effective. My big worry was buying the autozone/napa parts and not getting the same quality.

Thats not even a bad price. Still a hell of a lot cheaper then the dealer. I'll check them out.

Stay away from parts store parts for things like head gaskets, water pumps and timing components. Only thing I would use from a parts store would be some of the felpro gaskets and anti-freeze.

Didn't notice you were on a 420A. As long as its OEM your good to go. But you can save a few bucks going with a topline water pump and they are just as good as OEM.

Youll be fine just make sure you replace pulleys with oem parts, i used a 40 dollar wp on my third dsm just works fine. I never spend oem wp money and never will, but thats just me, also change the oem tensioner too. Change the belts and parts when recommened and your engine should hold up as far as thats concern but again shop around and see what best fits you, try stm, ex psi, sim, and jnz tuning for some good prices.

I would say check out rockauto.com most of their stuff is oem spec or better and half the price of autozone and other part store out there. I used to work for O'Reilly auto parts and I would order from them all the time and I never had a shop or customer come back complaining.

Ive never had any problem with a water pump from anyparts store iive used a far amount on alot of biulds not just dsms..timing belts cheap out on tho LOL most of the water pumps have a lifetime warrenty anyways

Im 2 weeks out from doing this, so this will give me time to do major research on the best one to use. Anyone wanna come help next saturday. LOL Im going to be doinng this with a buddy and i have a torn rotator cuff. LOL

As others have said, go to rockauto.com, and look at the gates kit for 66 bucks which comes with the belt, tensioner and idler pullies. You can get the same timing kit with the gates water pump for around 85. I would consider a new hydraulic tensioner while you are in there also. Rockauto has the beck/arnley brand for around 50. Beck/arnley is one of the highest quality aftermarket parts companies out there.

Holy crap...the whole kit for $85. Belt, pump and tensioner. I can definitely live with that. Especially since it comes highly recommended.

The actual tensioner is not included for that price. You get the tensioner pulley and idler pulley, but not the hydraulic tensioner.

IF you search around with google you can usually find a 5 percent discount code. The rock auto rep on here used to post them, but i haven't seen one in a while.

Thats still a darn good price. I think that settled my question. Looks like rockauto is going to be the place i get this. More Information for GATES TCKWP246 Thats the one for $84. and heres what included PowerGrip Premium OE Timing Belt Component Kit W/Water Pump; 4 Components (1 Belt, 0 Tensioners, 2 Idlers, 1 Water Pump); Gasket Not Included

Gates actually makes oem belts for quite a few companies out there, along with dayco.
