Viscous coupling possibly burned up. Could I still use the tranny?

This guy has a fwd car and has an awd tranny in it. He told me he didn't drive it much but i told him he may have burned up the viscous coupling. I have a fwd tranny he needs and I'm wanting an awd tranny to throw in my car while I have another tranny I have sent off to shep. He's wanting to do an even trade. I just want my dang car on the road. If the viscous coupling is burned up, would it really even matter if i was able to use a spool or VCE in the place of it? How much damage could be done? Thanks!

Anyone? I also have another tranny that I won't even be using at all. the bell housing is all busted up with spider cracks all in it and the mounting bracket bolts seized or the holes have been stripped out. Could I just pull the viscous from it and throw it in the tranny I wanna use for a short while to make it work? Or would there be some wear pattern that I'd have to be concerned with?

If you drive calmly you not only don't need a VC, you won't notice if it is missing.

Okay well I'm building a stroker and trying to hurry and get the car up and running (while still getting my other modifications). Of course I wouldn't be romping on it all the time etc. but it'll still need a breakin and such and I would like to see what it'll do until I'm able to get a tranny back from Shep. If the guy burned up the VC in the tranny by driving it around on a fwd (with no vce), would it do any other damage to the tranny? I could just swap it out with a good one from my tranny right?

dude i just replaced the trans In my 91 AWD, And it had a bad V/C
It must have siezed up because it drove ok Sept for the lack of 1st and
2nd Syncros...

Ok so the car ran but I Always blew front Cv boots apart and went though
abunch of used tires..So it Caused abuch of other Damage... My advice
Dont DO it.. ITs torture on ## drivetrain...Leave it on the jackstands....
Its where Mine Has Been For about a Month :toobad: ....because it seams
its SUPER hard to find driveline parts and no body has 3-bolt drivers rear
axels....that i snaped like a twig... :notgood: Wait till ## car is Right... Dont
rush Perfection....

Do you have a Axel to Spare?> :sneaky:

Well, I wasn't planning on driving with a bad vc. I just didn't know if it'd be okay if I took a known vc that was good and replaced the one that was possibly bad. Wasn't sure what problems a burned up vc could cause to the tranny. Although at this point I may wait, but still wondering if there would be any other damage to the tranny from a burned up vc and if any problems would arise by throwing in a good one.

Dont know if this helps, but I recently swapped in a different tranny and after finding out it had a broken center diff I swaped in both the center diff and VC out of my old tranny. Seems to be working fine.
