Quick VC question. I just bought one used, and I was wondering if I should be able to operate it by hand (turn the shafts in relation to each other). I can't, it's stiff as shit, just wondering if that's normal. It looks like it may have been heated with a torch during removal since there's some black sooting on one side of it, but it doesn't look that bad really.

Here's some pics, if it'll help.

Note 1: This shows the outer side of the vc, which looks fine except for the stange "burned" looking area.

Note 2: This shows the side, it has a "J X" stamped into it and the circumferential striations make it look like something may have been riding around the outside of it, like a belt, but I know that nothing does. Weird.

Note 3: Here's a shot of the "back" side. You can see more of the "burned" area and a light blue colored plastic material which seems to be in between the case and shaft, protruding out in a couple of spots. In cleaning it up and wiping it off, I discovered some small pieces of a grey soft foam-rubber sort of material, about the size of a flea, inside the shaft. Not sure what this is or where these little chunks came from, hopefully it's something that just got stuck to the gear oil left on the splines.

Okay yeah, I had considered that, but what about the function of the vc itself, should one be able to move it by hand, or should it be stiff like mine? I don't want to put it in if it's locked up.

Thats normal I just removed 2 in a week and it's normal you can probably move it an inch by hand but thats all.

Okay, that's cool. I can't move mine at ALL, and I'm not a weak dude, but hopefully it'll all work out.
