Hey guys!

I'm starting a side project that essentially is gonna do this when the car red lines:

Do you guys know what the voltage range is for the RPM gauge?

I'f I can tap in to that, then it'll just be a matter of cutting and placing some LED's so pictures of where the RPM cable is would be appreciated!

for the techies out there asking questions.. I'm planning to use Arduino for the RPM logic. Essentially when Voltage = X then light up the LED's

It won't look anything like that because that's an LCD screen.

You can replace the LED's with two stage ones, and hook them up to an RPM switch, but it's not going to look like that.

Only way to get an effect similar to this using a "normal" gauge would be to have a plexiglass overlay over the gauge face with the design etched into the underside of said piece of plexi. You will also need couple of LEDs placed somewhere so they are not seen, yet are shining at the edges of piece of plexiglass and lighting them up. That way when the engine reaches pre-set RPM, the LEDs will light up and make the design (that is otherwise barely visible) "appear" on the gauge.

Also easiest thing to do would be to get a simple shift light and reuse it's electronics instead of building a complete new system.

Also remember that you can't just vary voltage to an LED to control brightness. You either need to control amperage or use some sort of pulse-width modulation.

^^^ this.

Heres a rough how to do that:

Or if you aren't particularly E-savvy, there are pre made kits with pots (variable resistors) to do that.

OR if you are really savvy, you could add a ramp up/down circuit to go with the RPMs that would be a nice challenge. :thumb:

and as far as the plexiglas stuff... you might be able to use "paper thin LEC tech"

I dont know much about this stuff except that it exists. You could use an opaque plastic cut to the right picture to overlay it.

It would be hard to integrate the oem lights with this though. Thats some more creative thinking there.

That light-emitting paper is what nowadays is used for back light on cellphones and some flat screen TVs. Interesting stuff, and can be cut to any shape (and still work). Pretty expensive though.
