Kamloops,
im looking for some answers on this...
i have an oldschool palm that i have been using for datalogging. it works fine, but my predicament is...
A. i dont have a serial connection on my laptop
B. both my computers run vista, and therefore i cannot hotsync
so all the data stays on the palm... which is a pain in the ass since the cradle isnt 100% anymore.. and wont hold palm it... i have to have it duct taped together...
so i have a USB - Serial converter with the drivers installed. it registers at COM port 4.
i can use other serial devices just fine with it. i swapped pin 2 and 3 on the logger cable i made for the car as per the wiring diagrams.
the TMO software allows me to connect (doesnt connect when car is off or not plugged in) but it always says "link down". i changed the baud rate to 1200. still the same result.
now when its connected (all 3 wires connected to the OBD port)
what im looking for is anyone who has sucessfully used a USB connection to datalog with (i have seen some posts that people claim to do it), how did you do it? what software did you use? what hardware did you use? did you make your own logger cable? what OS are you running? what are the settings for your serial-usb adapter?
if you are going to tell me it wont work, please refrain from posting unless you have a detailed explanation as to why it wont work...

I dont think you can use usb at all.
hey, no offence dude... i saw your posts before on the topic. i did ask for useless posts like this not to be posted... i know alot of people are going to say it cant be done. but some people claim to have done it. im looking for those people to post, or people who know how to do it. and if you know exactly why it wont work.. then you can post no, but give a detailed explanation as to why... if you couldnt get it to work, and dont know why... dont make useless posts

Which version Palm OS do you have?

To bypass the Vista dilemma, consider installing an older version of Windows (XP, 2k, etc) by either creating another partition, and using the bootlog to allow you to select which version to boot, or using virtual PC.

Creating an additional partition may be difficult if you don't have partition magik or are not well versed in computers.
I am not entirely certain that virtual PC will allow you to use hotsync, but it's an easy software solution.
I know Vista is reported as one of the most hardware dominating OS's around, so it may actually require another hard drive. (A little 80g is around $40 at newegg.com.)

As for a rewire - sorry, I don't immediately know the specs.

yes, It can be logged through your usb, I made my own cable, I am running windows XP, I just used a serial to usb adapter with a the software that came with it, all I did to get it to work was click on the hotsync icon then click the the blue box that says hotsync (top left conner) then scroll down and click connection set-up and I did 1 of 2 things but, can't remember so, please try one at a time #1 I added a new connection by typing serial to usb #2 I just clicked on on craddle/cable and you should be done. Did you download the palm desktop first at http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/win_desktop.html and to make a cable just use this link: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203316 try and set it to 115,200 bps and it should stop the "link down" error. I hope this helps Oh!! if you need to know how the wires are connected to the dionagnostic port, here's a diagram

ok.. im having trouble deciphering your post... sounds like your talking about hotsyncing palm with the computer using the serial to usb cable. the reason i am saying that is not really an option, is because my laptop has vista... and palm desktop has known issues with vista. (i called palm, they know of the issues.. and they "might fix it", they "were not sure". what i am trying to do is run software like tunerstein, TMO, hand held halo on my laptop to datalog with, while using a usb cable. i can already log with the palm. i made my own cable as per the link you provided me, and it works great. i even swapped pin 2 and 3 on there as per the PC wiring diagram for the cable. when the pin is switched, i am able to have TMO connect, but it always says "link down"

Geez, talk about bumping a TWO-YEAR-OLD thread....:ohdamn:

For those who wanted [or will want] an answer though and future reference, I believe that you need a USB-to-Serial adapter that supports non-standard baud rate. Belkin and Keyspan have been reported to work well for others w/ data-logging software such as TMO, EvoScan, HHH, etc. [I have used these three]

For those that are trying to set up TMO to work, it appears the ds-map how-to link has changed.

Here is a current link that should help get your 1g ALDL cable together:

Sorry for bumping the old thread; I hope it helps those dedicated searchers looking for answers.
