Turbo related noise - Turbo has no play. Ideas? (Video)

I checked the turbo for shaft play and found none. No left to right, no up and down, no in and out. Afaik it has 160,000km on it.

Also I should note, that this only started happening when I set my timing. It's currently at +8*.

Looking at your profile it says that your basically running all stock. You should be running at 5* BTDC. As for the video. Is there a way that you can get a video on the engine bay while reving to hear whats going on under the hood?

Not sure what timing would have to do with making noises.

Is that turbo the original 14B? If so, I've seen many cases where high-mileage 14B's from daily-driven cars will have so much oil coking behind the oil shield that the shield will actually begin to rub the turbine wheel. It will make a "screeching" sound on a turbo with no shaft play.

Another thing to look for are random boost leaks that could cause a whistling sound.

I thought I read somewhere that running with a datalogger rebuked it to 8. As for the under hood cam it's funny you should mention that because I was actually thinking about rigging something up like that today. I'll see what I can do though.

It's the original 14B. I thought about taking it all apart but there's no way I'd go to the trouble of rebuilding it I'd rather just get an evo 16G.

I know the TB shaft seals are leaking and it's actually so bad I can't tell where any of the other leaks are (it leaks like a freaking sieve).

All the valves are closed at TDC. So yes.

My car was doing the exact same noise as yours. It has quit now. But if you figure out what the problem is let me know.

Thank you for the back-up on that. I thought that everyone knew that BLT when your engine is at TDC. .

KILLER> yes it makes a big difference. When your pumping air into the BLT it will not build pressure and you might hear it leaking into the chambers and out the exhaust. If you run a BLT make shure your engine is at TDC by the marks on the crank pully and timing cover.

Hey, my turbo was making this same noise and while I had it off the car for my engine rebuild I noticed 3-4 cm long crack on the hotside housing. Had it welded over will update when I have the turbo back on the car.
