My 420a turbo I recently bought runs real rough and has little to no throttle response. It runs rich. It is tuned with a aem fic, my question is can this fic lose the tune when the battery died? Or does this sound like a timing issue? It takes a lot of cranking to get it to fire up. Idles like a desiel tractor.

On top of what was asked have you done a BLT? I don't know on 420As but half the time if your running rich you've got a boost leak somewhere

It can be anything too under or oversizd fuel injectors or fuel pump, type of gas, boost leak, bad tune, internal weren't upgraded with high boost I have never seen a 420a run more than 8psi safely without headwork but i could be wrong the block can handle alot of boost but head not so much

Get your facts straight please. The bottom end is the weak link in the 420a and the head is the stronger suit. The pistons and rods can't handle more then 8psi not the head.

Sorry for the long response, when I bought it he told me it was the alternator, I checked the alternator it was bad so I replaced it now it won't start half the time. It ran like poo when I bought it but did so with no knocks and.at the time would fire right up. It has forged rotating assembly wiseco pistons eagle rods and crank, obx 3" exhaust, fmic kit that don't exactly fit right, tial 38mm wastegate, greddy type s bov, star racing exhaust manifold, walbro 255 fuel pump, not sure on the injectors, the turbo is a air research t3, has some.shaft play but the fins are good and it dont leak oil, it has some sort of fuel pressure regulator. The aem fuel ignition controller I read is just a fmu. I can tell you that he tried to weld the down pipe to the turbo and csnt weld to save his life and it does leak right there. Thanks for the help guys! I can't wait to figure out what's wrong so I can drive it!!!

Can you explain what missing link is, and afc? Is afc air fuel controller? If so I believe that's what my aem is. Car has no wideband either but plan to get one.asap

Well I'm pretty sure your turbo is off an older ford motor so I'd keep a good eye on it. So with just a fmu that could be your issue. With just a 12;1 rising rate it's not always right you might need something like a 10:1. Which is the disc and springs inside the fmu. If you have no fuel cut defender your ecu will cut fuel when it detects to much pressure (boost) in the intake manifold. You wire it into the map sensor. And unless you have something to detect knock you will never know it's doing so with out some sort of tuning software. With so much installed it could take forever to properly diagnosis your issues. I suggest having a real tuning shop to fix it or your at high risk of major engine failure. Most of us are to poor for megasquirt so we tune the afr with a wide band and an air fuel controller. Get a wide band installed and post any codes on the obd2.

I don't know if I would consider what you have your "tune" on to be a proper tune. There are to many variables within the engine to keep that from being a consistent method to running the vehicle. Anything can change the numbers within that unit. For the 4g63 dsmlink allows you to accommodate and acclimate to different variables. I would check into a standalone unit from aem, megasquirt or something similar. Maybe a tune shop could lead you into the right direction, or someone more knowledgeable on the site. I know there is a lot involved with running boost through a 420a, as I had a friend that I helped do this to his car. There was a month after the finished result were we were scratching our heads, about to put the car on craigslist. It can be a frustrating process, but when you figure it out you will have learned so much more. I would say check some of your basic maintenance things first. Like

timing
spark plugs and wires
sensors
boost leaks
fuel pressure
turbo shaft play

start small, expect the best, prepare for the worst!

Good thing is, you got a lot of very knowledgeable people on this site. Some come off as assholes, but they are all here to help. You can't get that kind of treatment on a Honda forum. That's for sure! Haha!

Hey guys sorry I havnt been on here in a while. Im going to check sensors I think it may be my crank position sensor. I also just bought a aem basic nothing special wideband and a manual boost controller. I havnt had a chance to work on the car lately but as soon as I get a chance to hook up the wideband on I'll let you guys know what it is reading. I have read that crank position sensor will cause my car to run the way it is, can anybody tell me where this sensor is located on my engine? Thanks guys
