1G Trying to Purchase a 6 Bolt Short Block

My 1g is still down after discovering NA pistons in my block. I don't want to run it and I feel a rebuild is definitely needed in order to drive without worries. I feel like I would be better off buying a used short block for the time being since I want to slowly build my original block on the side and the cost of a proper bottom end rebuild far exceeds a used short block but I have looked everywhere and am having a hard time finding one. Looked all over craigslist, ebay, salvage yards and even called some of those companies that sell imported motors and I haven't had any luck.

Does anyone know of a good source for a 6 bolt short block? Most of the similar forum posts I have found takes me to places that are out of business. I'm really hoping to get something that is ready to run other than adding some new seals so I can continue my 1g project.

Have you tried the facebook groups NLAND DSM and SoCal DSM Classifieds?

They are both pretty active groups with a large number of DSMers on them. Somebody on there might have what you need.

It's been a while since I've seen locals post 6 bolts. They used to be all over Craigslist a few years back.

wait a minute, so your engine is a turbo motor with N/T pistons, or a complete non turbo motor?

you could simply use stock turbo pistons, and do a rebuild on your current block, provided it's cylinder bores are still in good enough health.

Yea... I was thinking that as my other option. Its the original block from my 1990 TSi AWD. Bores appear to be in great condition, still see the lines from the last hone. Looks like it was rebuilt last year with the wrong pistons. If I were to rebuild it, would I need to get the bores rehoned?

if you put turbo pistons in, it would be best to have a fresh hone for the new piston rings to seat on, but if that is the case You can do that all yourself with a honing, tool and a power drill, but you just have to check the tolerances in the bores in a few places, to make sure they are still within spec, in most cases you can get away with a DIY hone, but again check tolerances before hand, it's pretty easy, you can buy turbo 1g pistons, take your current stock pistons/rods out, and have a shop press out the old n/t pistons and then have them press new turbo pistons on there, or if you buy used complete turbo 1g 6 bolt pistons with rods, all you'd need to do is install them with new bearings and rings.

If you decide to rebuild your stock motor, and have turbo pistons again etc, you can source another 6 bolt block, and have that built for power... ...the way I see it is if you know your stock block is good enough to rebuild with low cost, then do it, anyone can sell you a motor and claim it has x amount of miles or is in x condition, at least with your current motor, redone right yourself, you'd have the benefit of knowing you have a fresh rebuild.
