My neighbor has a 1997 eclipse rs 420a. He just recently got it and one day it wouldnt go into the bottom half of the gears. 2nd 4th and reverse won't engage. Slides in but slide right back out. Only those 3 gears. I tried bleeding it for him, no luck. When I tried to pull it out of 3rd it takes a long pull to get it out, almost like I have to go to 4th to get it out. Any suggestions? He was told the clutch was replaced a couple months ago. My initial thought was trans. Maybe the synchros are bad. Any help would do. Please.

You probably have a horseshoe clip off (or loose). They are located on top of the tranny, just below the air intake/battery box. Its much easier to see/get at with the battery and air intake removed (wait I just took some pics for a write up I'm doing).

Here is a pic of the cable and horshoe clip for one side (the other cable is right next to it). This is with the battery base removed as well;

The clip is up in the air. It actually goes on the other side of that bracket. Like you can see in this pic;

The other tranny cable is next to it on the other arm. Follow that down to check the other horseshoe clip. You alo want to be sure that the eyelets didn't break, like this;

If you look in the upper part of the pic, you can see on the other cable that the eyelet is no longer attached to the cable. These can also rip.

If the problem isn't in that area, go to the shifter side and see if you have a problem with the cabling at that side.

That was it the cable clip came out; the shifter was in a funny position so I figured some thing like that happened. But it was 1:30am and could not find my flash light, so I waited till this morning to look.

Thanks!!!

The clip came out. On top the solid metal sleeve the keeps the cable in line was broken. Replaced. Problem solved. Thanks guys.
